A biographical epic of the controversial and influential black leader Malcolm X. Beginning as a small-time gangster in Harlem, he worked his way up to Islam. Together with like-minded people, he fought against racism, corruption and lawlessness.
Malcolm X 4K ReviewThis academically rigorous biographical sketch of Malcolm X's history has simplicity and grace. Carefully bringing together the racial contradictions that have accumulated over four hundred years, Spike Lee is by no means an observer. He empathizes with Malcolm's spiritual journey of discovery and places his Road at the center of the film. The long running time is justified by the fact that this is a road movie about the life of a famous man.
Denzel Washington, then unencumbered by stardom, gives one of the best roles of his career. Easily and without much effort. On the hand goes and the resemblance of the actor with Malcolm.
You have to hand it to Spike - Denzel was brought out to the front of the film. All the other actors tried not to outshine him, limiting themselves to strong, but still modest roles. That said, Delroy Lindo and Angela Bassett gave very decent supporting 'arias'.
Spike Lee's early work made me very happy with his sincerity. He had a lot to say, and he put all his talent into getting his views across to a mass audience. Of course, almost every one of his early films was a bit 'shaky' on the subject of racism. However, the Malcolm X epic remains a pleasant island of respectability for the real history of modern America, an uncomfortable truth. I recommend it, especially since the movie isn't boring at all.
