In the plot of the new movie, Batman tries to find out who is behind the corruption in Gotham. The Dark Knight also has to engage in a dangerous confrontation with the serial killer Enigma, while dealing with his childhood traumas.

A gloomy, rainy Gotham, ravaged by corruption and gangs. Every day there is a lot of violence, but Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), aka Batman, hopes to one day rid the city of crime, continuing the cause of his dead father - he tried to make the world a better place. Living conditions in Gotham dispose people to fly off cuckoo, so Riddler (Paul Dano), a slightly (?) crazy mystery man, appears among the citizens, brutally killing malicious politicians, bringing terror to people, and leaving envelopes with puzzles for Batman. The puzzles get solved, the crimes get more complicated. Catching Riddler is helped by our cape-wearing hero Selina Kyle (Catwoman Zoe Kravitz) and even Penguin (Colin Farrell; but he has to be chased). All so that Gotham can sleep well.

You can say what you want about Todd Phillips' "Joker," but he did a very important thing for superheroics - he erased the line between attraction blockbusters and art cinema. Matt Reeves' "Batman" followed the path already trodden by "Golden Lion." The new black-cloaked guardian of the peace is going to wash the bad guys off the sidewalks of Gotham like Scorsese's "Taxi Driver", the timing and detective story are close to Fincher's "Zodiac", and the atmosphere is very much like the canonical "Casablanca", though, with explosions and a masquerade. Such a fiery cocktail kicks off the DCEU universe reboot, opening a new page in comic book movie history. The excruciatingly long running time (which, by Scorsese's standards, would pass for a first act) is justified by the tangled detective story: by all the rules of noir cinema - no one rushes anywhere. The voice-over, inserted according to the old-fashioned laws of golden Hollywood, adds sentimentality, but not cringe Sniderian, but rather nostalgic.

The statement that Pattinson is the best on-screen Batman so far may deprive many people of sleep, but the statement is still worth accepting, not only did he do the job, but he even exceeded expectations. The actor promised that if the film fails, he will go to work in the porn industry, but apparently not fate. Bruce Wayne in Reeves is a traumatized boy, trying to match the figure of his late father. Confident of his infallibility, Bruce throws everything he can into the fight against corruption and crooked townspeople, but the crime rate still creeps up. Pattinson's Bruce Wayne is more vulnerable, questioning, alive, and he shatters the framework of the usual toxic masculinity canonical to the iconic character. It's also the first Batman not to hide the dark makeup around his eyes, oddly enough, in his predecessors it always disappeared with the removal of the mask. The entry into the new era of conscious chimbo has been a success.

Colin Farrell literally plays Robert De Niro playing Penguin. Matt Reeves alone knows why it took hours to make the Irish actor into his American counterpart with a Brooklyn accent, though the costume party did succeed. Oz (aka Penguin), played by Farrell, is a charismatic gangster who blends into the noir tale like a native. The casting in the film as a whole is very successful, the same Zoe Kravitz, who had previously voiced Catwoman in "Lego: Batman", proved irreplaceable and stole all the viewer's attention. It's hard to imagine anyone else in that role anymore. As for Paul Dano, it seems that playing lunatics is his destiny.

Unfortunately, in Russia the screenings of "Batman" were canceled a couple of days before the rental, although this is exactly the movie we needed in this difficult time. Gotham mired in evil and corruption, contrary to previous interpretations, could not be changed by a single hero in a cape. Saving drowning is a team effort, and the fear instilled by a mysterious superhero in the city's criminals creates even more fear in the hearts of citizens, provoking real chaos. The rule "wedge with a wedge" sounds good, but in practice does not work, it turns out, people need hope. At the critical point, Gotham will rise from the ashes, the citizens will have a foothold, but not only in the savior in the cape, but also in the cohesion that they lacked.
