According to the plot, the main character Lynn Houlton (Emily Blunt) intends to go to the upper reaches of the Amazon to find the legendary tree, which, according to the legends of South American Indian tribes, has magical healing properties. Lily will be accompanied by her sophisticated brother McGregor and reckless cruise ship captain Frank (Dwayne Johnson). In the wilds of the jungle, travelers will be trapped not only by the deadly representatives of the Amazonian flora and fauna, but also by traps set up by members of a rival expedition, and even encounters with the supernatural.

The height of the First World War, throughout Europe (and not only) is raging "Spanish flu", which claimed more lives than any weapon on both sides of the front. Botany doctor Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) believes that thousands of lives can be saved if you collect an expedition to the Amazon and find the Tree of Life there - a mythical plant whose flowers, according to legend, cure any ailment. Funding for her, of course, no one gives - both because the idea sounds crazy, and because she is a woman (which for the geographic community is even a bigger stop sign than the savagery of the whole enterprise). Then, having stolen an important artifact that could indicate the whereabouts of the Tree, Lily, together with her brother, went to Brazil herself and there she found a cunning tourist guide Frank (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), who agreed to lead her along the numerous tributaries of the Amazon (albeit with some of her own secret purposes). At the same time, the Tree is trying to find a German prince (Jesse Plemons), who wants to use him to win Germany in the war, as well as a detachment of the accursed conquistador Aguirre (yes, the one about whom Werner Herzog shot his "Wrath of God"), wandering through the jungle more than one hundred years.

Not every day nowadays original big blockbusters come out - to be more specific, they come out so rarely that one would like to treat the few exceptions in absentia with some reverence. In general, what the industry had to bring us to make a movie like "Jungle Cruise" feel like a breath of fresh air. Not because he is particularly good, and not because he is at least somewhat innovative. It's simply because for once, Disney didn't make a live-action remake of the old cartoon, but tried to make new "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Comparing the "Cruise" with the "Pirates" is perhaps a thankless task. But this parallel cannot be avoided, there are too many similar terms. Both are based on an attraction from Disneyland, both have an exotic historical setting with a dose of mysticism, there is an ambiguous trickster character played by a terribly popular actor, and among the antagonists there are damned adventurers (only here conquistadors, not pirates), along with ambitious opportunists (Jess , in fact, the local Lord Beckett, only much more caricatured). If you dig a little deeper, there are actually even more similarities: both in characters, and in narrative structure, and, perhaps, in intonation. If this movie came out in the early tenths, he would probably be accused of an unprincipled attempt to walk the beaten track of Verbinski Gore - for the same they criticized, say, the quite tolerable "Prince of Persia" with Gyllenhaal. But now, in a world captured by gray superheroics, no one seems to be against outright epigonism. At least "Cruise" knows who is worth repeating.

How well he does it is another matter entirely. For an attraction-based movie, Jungle Cruise is sorely lacking in this attraction. Jaume Collet-Serra, mostly known for his action films with Liam Neeson, is still far from Gore Verbinski: he does not have the vision and handwriting of a born blockbuster director, and he is clearly not so good at building complex large-scale action sequences (to his credit, not enough who can). As soon as an active action begins in "Cruise", the movie instantly turns into a standard Disney action movie of recent years, the kind that they now send straight to streaming: almost entirely done in close-ups, with a barely hidden chroma key in the background and a camera that is afraid to show at least one trick without mounting glues every couple of seconds.

But the film unfolds in relatively quiet moments. When his characters just walk the Amazon on an old launch and sort things out in a funny way, when Jesse Plemons with a funny accent negotiates with the bees nodding in response, and the Rock tortures the interlocutors with quirky puns: this is something like his character-forming trait - I must say, very funny. "Jungle Cruise" generally knows how to be funny and charming, at least in those moments when it does not try too hard to cram the new ethics into an old-school adventure story (tries weakly, in Disney style, so that in China it would not be difficult to re-sound especially poignant moments ). But all his successes and all his creative creativity - like the memorable design of the damned conquistadors, one of whom, for example, consists of a huge swarm of bees and honeycombs oozing with honey - break up against a mediocre realization. About the same gray action, about a strained happy ending, about all these small details that separate the cool from the normal, masterpieces from films, where you will forget the names of the heroes on the way from the cinema to home.
