Delving into a local landfill, cybernetics doctor Ido (Christoph Waltz) finds the top of a cyborg girl (Rosa Salazar, hopefully her breakthrough role) with big eyes and, as it later turns out, her same big heart - and quite literally. The doctor repairs the girl and brings her back to life: now she has to learn the bitterness and joys of the post-apocalyptic world, meet love and meet the deadly threat. Serious people from the last heavenly city want to get Alita 4K - or rather, the long-lost technology that underlies her cybernetic organism.

At the beginning of the century, James Cameron planned to film the Gunnm manga, better known in the USA as, actually, the “Battle Angel”, a simple but colorful story about a cyborg girl in a dark and cruel post-apocalyptic future. And somehow it did not work out: many years passed, Cameron finally became the main thunderstorm of the world box office, and the live-action version of Alita 4K remained his unclosed gestalt. Realizing in time that he wouldn’t get out of his “Avatars” for another ten years, Cameron decided to tear the “Battle Angel” from his heart and give it to someone else, and to modestly look after the project from a cozy production (and scenario) chair .

The easiest way, of course, was to hire JJ Abrams or a similar director - a skilled person, but not very prominent, able to adapt to someone else's vision. But either someone upstairs got bored, or Cameron had a sense of humor - he chose Robert Rodriguez, the author of Machete and Sin City. The candidate, to put it mildly, is not obvious.

The Mexican director, who basically made films for a penny in his barn (almost literally), did not see two hundred million budgets in his life - the more interesting it was to see if his creative vein would be bent under the weight of such a project. Not bent: it turns out, with big money, Robert's visionary gift only blooms. In terms of staging and visual sophistication, Alita UHD is far ahead of most competitors and at the best moments comes close to the Spielberg's First Player to Get Ready. By the way, the film will most likely be actively compared with him - and not always in a positive connotation.

Rodriguez always gravitated to attraction (remember, at least his experiment with smells in the terrible “4-D Spy Children”) - in Alita, his love for everything stylish, loud and roaring reaches some completely crazy heights, since the material has it. And do not care that “the book is better”, which turned out stupid, sometimes ridiculous and prohibitively infantile: otherwise, with the adaptation of the manga, it still could not come out, but here they at least sincerely tried to make it fun. “Alita” exists entirely in detail: the physical texture of the world, where no limb is either a harpoon, or a blade, or some other horror. She is fond of small creative joys, absolutely not wanting to work with history as a whole - and this often reminds an improved, expensive (and slightly more restrained) version of “Spy Kids” (a little less often - “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava”, but let's not talk about sad )

However, it’s for the best that Alita UHD is not so interested in the story - four volumes of manga in a two-hour film are still not adequately put down, even if you are James Cameron, even though I do not know Aaron Sorkin. And working on the surface, you will get another teenage dystopia about the chosen one of fate and a tyrannical regime in the boring cyberpunk world “N-hundred years after the Great War”. Unlike the recent “Predatory cities”, “Alita” does not even try to pretend that there is some kind of deep drama in her unicellular history, and her world is thought out a little further than beautiful scenery. Rodriguez uses his constant method of “work with what is” and hurriedly (sometimes too much) rushes past all the exhibition scenes to those where there is something to blow up and who to beat.
The film is very easy and convenient to characterize through its title character. Alita, in general, is also not very worried about meanings, she is a completely elemental character: to act, she does not need any scenario conventions there. This is all around their personal dramas: the good doctor Ido and his wife were scattered on the opposite sides of the barricades by the death of their daughter, the guy Hugo is tormented by his conscience because of a not too honest way of earning, even villains, small and big, have their own petty fears and injuries. But Alita Ultra HDR is not afraid of anything: she breaks and shreds, because she cannot do otherwise, violence in her DNA - what the film says very literally. By the way, the film has everything in order with him (by violence) - Rodriguez, even the sparing PG-13 rating, doesn’t interfere with cutting heads, cutting people in half and showing a close-up of a pool of blood.
