The Crown Prince of the African state wants to find a wife for himself and goes to America for this. There he introduces himself as an ordinary person and goes to work in a diner, since his choice fell on the owner's daughter.
Coming To America 4K ReviewThe famous American comedian Eddie Murphy found his real fame and recognition in the 80s, when the accumulated experience of performing in various clubs in the country finally allowed him to become a regular participant in the popular television show Saturday Night Live. In his comedy sketches, Murphy was not afraid to ridicule anyone, with special emphasis on issues of racial discrimination, national stereotypes and politics, thanks to which each appearance of the comedian was accompanied by applause, although it must be admitted that he also had ill-wishers who were not ready to go beyond the bounds of decency imposed by somewhat outdated moral norms. And nevertheless, Murphy had much more fans than enemies, from which he got his rightful place on television and even managed to revive the former popularity of the show, which so needed a quality reformation with more daring and poignant humor. However, dwelling on the positions of the star of small screens was definitely not in Murphy's plans, and therefore when he received an offer to star in the detective comedy '48 Hours', without hesitation he signed a contract, thereby ensuring himself worldwide fame. '48 Hours' became one of the most sought-after films of its decade, after which Murphy was literally snapped up by major Hollywood studios. And in 1983, together with director John Landis, the comedian released the film 'They Swapped Places', which further strengthened his fame and allowed him to be much more demanding in his choice of scripts. Murphy remembered the positive experience of shooting with Landis for a long time, and he was not at all averse to working with a director with whom it was easy to find a common language. It took a relatively short time to wait for this, because the producers of the Paramaunt pictures studio got into the hands of the very intriguing idea of the satirist Art Buchwald, which tells the story of an African prince who came to seek his true love in America. And despite the fact that the studio bosses did not do well with Buchwald, refusing him to further develop the project, the tape was still put into production without the knowledge of the author. In the year of its release, "Trip to America" gained considerable popularity among viewers around the planet and is now rightly considered a classic that is suitable for repeated revision.
The very same plot of the film tells us about the adventures of the crown prince of a certain fictional African country Zamund, Akim (Murphy), who has reached a certain age and now, according to the foundations of his native state, he needs to get married. The only problem is that the hero's father, King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), is not going to abandon the ancient tradition for the sake of his son and demands that Akim marry a bride who has been specially selected and prepared for further reign. But the prospect of marrying one who is not at all sweet to the heart is frankly disliked by the young prince, who decides to boldly disobey the royal order and goes along with his faithful assistant Sammy (Arsenio Hall) to America, so that there, far from annoying parents and outdated foundations, find the one that he can call his queen. And so that not a single girl is seduced by big money and power, Akim decides to present himself as the most ordinary, poor guy who has not a penny in his pocket. Having settled in a not very presentable apartment, the Crown Prince decides that he needs to get a job as an ordinary person and gets a job in a diner, where he is not entrusted with the most prestigious assignments. But the most important thing here is that the owner of the establishment has a pretty and terribly charming daughter named Lisa (Shari Hidley), for whom Akim has big plans from now on. And yet, for the time being, he cannot open up to her, trying to build relationships on the basis of equal social status. However, such a fairy tale cannot last forever, because Akim will still need to return home and decide what to do next. The situation is further complicated by the fact that such an adventure of his son is not at all to the liking of the king, who will try to do everything in his power so that the son finally bows his head to customs and forget about his adventures in America, which may be a free country, but its customs are not must interfere with the order of things of foreign countries.
Of course, the audience expected a lot from the comedy of John Landis with the participation of Eddie Murphy. Their previous experience of co-operation, "They Swapped Places," became one of the favorite Christmas films of the American public, which means "A Trip to America" should have been at least as good. But in order not to repeat itself and not build another adventurous comedy with elements of a detective story, Landis and Murphy made a bias towards the melodramatic component, which was very unusual. The 80s public is used to seeing Eddie Murphy as a swashbuckling guy who does a great job with firearms, takes part in pursuits and hand-to-hand combat. Also, the comedian was loved by many fans for his hooligan roles, where he, as usual, acts on the other side of the law. In this picture, Murphy had to play a calmer, measured role, driven by the desire to find true love and partially shaded by naivety. Many of the actor's usual comedic tricks could not be used here, from which the image of Akim turned out to be not as frisky and impetuous as the same Axel Fowley from "Beverly Hills Cop", but on the other hand, participation in "Trip to America" showed that Murphy is capable of changing familiar images and feels very confident as a romantic hero who needs to show his strengths in more playful, serious methods. And we must admit that he did it.
The main humor of the film is built around a well-known artistic template, when a hero with completely different social and cultural foundations, unusual for ordinary Americans, arrives on the territory of the Stars and Stripes, colliding with a civilization that is completely alien to him. Of course, one should not expect anything destroying the canons from "A Trip to America", but it was very funny and sweet to watch how the hero played by Eddie Murphy, as well as his friend Sammy, aka Arsenio Hall, try to settle on an ordinary city street, while trying to dissolve in the gray mass of local inhabitants. And in some places Arsenio Hall even manages to amuse us more than Eddie Murphy, because, unlike the main star of the picture, his colleague was assigned an exclusively comedic role without an unnecessary admixture of romance. So Hall repeatedly violated the conspiracy, thereby achieving a simply hilarious effect from his actions, which mixed logic with absurdity.
In the end, I want to say that "A Trip to America" is one of the best films with the participation of Eddie Murphy and skillfully plays on stereotypes, giving them a sharp, entertaining form.
