The main victory is life
Encircled by enemies, you look at the endless sea. Somewhere there is a house behind the horizon. And between you a sea depths - a cemetery of thousands of soldiers.

Christopher Nolan goes against the mainstream, yields unrealistic special effects, pathetic heroism and motivational phrases to comics. The director brings to the main plan the fate of a person, choice and consequences.

This is not just a reconstruction of the real events that occurred during the French campaign of the Second World War. "Dunkirk" showed the face of the war - youthful. Sentry sent to the slaughterhouse by the sons. This movie is about the fact that the war is not only a confrontation between the two sides, mutual bombardment and shelling. Very often you are just a target on the fly with an enemy that can not be resisted. And the fate of man - a small boat in the epicenter of the storm.

One of the most important, in my opinion, ideas that the film conveys is the human choice. The main characters constantly have to choose, and as a rule, every next decision is a trap, from which it's harder to get out alive. The choice: to save yourself or, risking your life, help others. Choice: sit flat on a peaceful shore or rescue soldiers in trouble. Sacrifice an innocent life or go against the majority. The choice we make determines us as people. This I felt when I watched the movie. "Dunkirk does not relax, it makes you feel the atmosphere of that situation: hear the menacing noise of the German Luftwaffe, hear the torpedo whistle standing on the deck, hear the endless ticking of the clock, which does not bode well.

The creators of the film specially selected young actors, whose peers were evacuated from the city of Dunkirk in 1940. This time, Nolan did not set himself the task of surprising the unexpected turns of the plot, puzzles and tricks, he wanted to tighten the atmosphere of the film, to convey the feeling, of a man who was almost in a desperate situation.

The film has three main lines of narration: terrestrial, air and sea. Four elements: earth, air, fire and water. Three different points of view: officers, soldiers and civilians. Three time lines: hours, days, weeks.

"Dunkirk" is an incredibly beautiful movie. There is so much sea in it, bottomless, boundless, blue-green. There's so much sky in it. There are so many tragedies in it. The shooting is impeccable: spectacular panoramas and close-ups, diluted by the dynamics of air battles.

Separately, I note the installation of sound, the crack of the bursting pier, the sound of a broken boat bullet and the rest - a pledge, at least, of the Oscar nomination for best sound editing.
