The main mainstream bestseller of recent years, “Fifty Shades of Gray 4K” by British writer E.L. James (real name - Erica Mitchell) was born as an Internet “fan fiction” based on “Twilight”. Later it was turned into an independent romantic work devoid of mysticism and in 2011 it was published by a small publishing house with almost no promotion. However, this did not stop the “Shades” from becoming a cult hit, attracting the attention of the sharks of the publishing business, and, for example, selling in England a better print run than the entire Harry Potter series (!). James's book was so popular that it caused a boom in demand for other romantic erotic publications intended for women. Authors, formerly known only to devoted connoisseurs, made good money from reprinting their novels if they were at least a little similar to “Shades”.
Screen adaptation of a book with multimillion crowds of female fans is always an extremely responsible task. Therefore, the producers risked a lot when they entrusted the project to the age-old but not experienced British director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who spent most of her creative life doing video art and therefore, before starting work on the “Shades” she shot only one full-length film - the 2009 biopic “Become John Lennon ". How did Taylor-Johnson cope with her task?
Not flawless, but competent. More than competent. The main part and the main advantage of “Fifty Shades of Gray” are numerous erotic scenes, which can be compared frankly with sex scenes of the “Basic Instinct”. It is clear that in 2015 such frankness is no longer shocking. But for the mainstream romantic film in the “Shades” sex, there is more than enough flesh and pain (let's not forget that love here is not only passionate, but also sadomasochistic).

At the same time, you can only find fault with the fact that the director should better feed the leading actress - the protruding ribs of Dakota Johnson do not look very aesthetically pleasing. Especially in the scene where the star is attached to the ceiling and her body is pulled into a string. In America, also some were offended that the audience did not show Dornan's penis. However, Taylor-Johnson is definitely more visible which parts of her hero’s body the spectators like to consider. But straight men definitely do not like to study other people's penises. So there are only gays left - too small an audience to indulge in to the detriment of the main audience of the “Shades”.
Even if the director had failed everything else, the abundant sex of the “Shades” and the heroic planning of the characters would have been enough to give a positive assessment to the erotic film. But the “Shades” have other advantages. First of all, an intriguing plot. Perhaps even more intriguing than in the book, although the main events in the film are the same as in the novel. What is the difference? In the relationship between the characters. The book, with all the merits of Christian as a handsome and millionaire, repeatedly emphasizes that this is a hero with dark, frightening fantasies, that Ana plays with fire when she contacts Gray, and that their union is doomed from the very beginning. In the picture, Christian turned out to be softer and more tender, and his romance with Ana is not so much a game of a cat and a mouse, as tense love relationships that eventually become equal.
