Arthur Fleck lives with his sick mother in a disadvantaged area of ​​the city, works as a clown, barely makes ends meet, smokes a lot and laughs even more (but this is a rare diagnosis, let him not bother you). The blows of fate often arrive from where they did not wait, then the punks in the street will be beaten, then colleagues at work will humiliate. Even the kid in the bus can not make faces without condemning others. It seems that for the main character in this world there is absolutely no place. “Do you have negative thoughts?” Asks the psychotherapist. “Doctor, all my thoughts are negative,” says Arthur. And among the darkest weekdays and for Arthur, a saving ray of hope is lit. But when Arthur realizes the illusory nature of this, then the glass of his anger overflows and falls in a real tsunami on the already restless Gotham.

It is worth immediately pointing to the elephant in the room: the "Joker" painfully resembles the "King of Comedy" Martin Scorsese, in which they added a flavor enhancer and threw it into a huge vat with black cloth. Even the references to the Taxi Driver here are so recognizable that they will be noticed by a person who knows the recognized Scorsese masterpiece in the trailer. The director’s mudboard is read extremely easily, which is neither bad nor good (we are all inspired by something), but it becomes a little uncomfortable with the constant feeling of deja vu. Colors, sharpness, rage, everything is twisted to the maximum, like the radical idea of ​​the protagonist - this is an extreme that is one step away from the absurd. Of course, such extremes are inherent in the Joker as a character, and the form chosen by the director emphasizes the character of the protagonist, clearly conveying to the viewer his inner experiences.

The most successful films regarding the characters of the DCEU universe are in no way connected with plans for an expanded cinematic universe (in fact, the Nolan trilogy and the Phillips film, that's all). The decision to make the Joker an independent project, independent of the children's matinee, having slapped the R rating and splashed all the walls with blood, is an idea in a million. At the same time, Todd Phillips did not download and somehow move away from the character’s story. On the contrary, he managed to keep all the important details, albeit fictional, but the biography of the hero, plunge into the darkest part of his soul, turning the Joker inside out in front of the audience.

You can’t talk badly about Joaquin our Phoenix in this life, otherwise you risk getting a ticket to hell for blasphemy. At least because at the moment he is one of the most outstanding artists of our time. In The Joker, the Phoenix manages to punch his own ceiling with his head, and it seems that infinity is not the limit for him.

We have already heard many variants of the Joker laugh (from Mark Hammil to, God forgive me, Jared Leto), but it was Joaquin who added to this distinctive feature of the hero an angry soreness and bitterness that speak more about the character than the entire carefully written backstory. It’s hard to imagine if he would have reached the film “The Golden Lion” and the mass insanity, if not for Joaquin (no). His physical transformation, body language and heavy eyes betray the actor of the Joker, which is recognizable without makeup and green hair. Behold, flocks, a real miracle of transformation, we will turn water into wine a little later, stay tuned.

"The Joker", of course, is one of the brightest outbreaks in the niche of the comic book adaptations, but, judging outside the scope of the genre, the drama of the film is not something that pulled on the same "Golden Lion". We all know that what is good for a comic is death for an ordinary drama. The hero is complex, there is some kind of social subtext, but the character’s motivation dangles to himself on the surface, and suspense is pumped through dialogs, each scene is chewed for the viewer and leaves nothing to the imagination. Therefore, the most ungrateful thing in this case is to go to a session with exaggerated expectations, which are difficult to avoid, given the uncontrolled wave of hype fanned around the project. This is not the second coming, it is just a standalone DCEU film that we deserve.
