In just two films, Jordan Peele has become one of America's foremost filmmakers, whose influence was recently confirmed by the Screenwriters Guild, which named his screenplay for the satirical parable "Away" the best of the 21st century. His new film, with the eloquent and original title Nope (in Russia it's been dubbed No, but Nope is more accurate, though again we may be faced with a hidden acronym), is yet another test for Peel, who once again has to prove that he's earned the recognition. As with "Us," there are no plot details, but you can admire the intriguing poster with the big cloud and the cast, in which you can meet Oscar-winning Daniel Kaluu and Stephen Yang, who has been gaining great momentum in recent years.

Nope 4K Review
O.J. (Daniel Kaluya) and Emerald (Kiki Palmer), who own a small ranch near Hollywood and provide horses for filming, discover alien activity on their land. More specifically, in the sky: something that looks like a flying saucer opens a hunt for humans and hides behind the clouds. The heroes first want to run away, but then they decide to capture the "saucer" (that's what they will call the UFO) on camera, except there's one problem when it comes up - all electrical devices malfunction.

Jordan Peele rose to fame with the sketch show "Key and Peele" and was originally known as a comedy writer and actor. In 2017, he wrote and directed "Away," for which he won an Oscar: with the award came big budgets and creative freedom. A couple of years later another horror film, "Us," came out, notable but a little less grandiose. No one knew what to expect from the third Saw movie, which cemented its title as a master of the genre, because the trailer was clear about nothing. All the more interesting for the viewer to guess from the frames and try to figure out what to expect. Will the plot become clearer after watching the movie? At first glance it looks like a comic horror with a plot that is surrealistic, and it may remain that way, if there is no desire to dive into the cultural context and analyze the underlying symbolism, peeling away layer upon layer. Both are good, nobody makes you strain yourself, the movie is entertaining and, most importantly, entertaining.

The film begins with a quote from Nahum 3:6, "I will throw mud on you, treat you with contempt, and expose you to the world." Already promising: as we know, if the Bible is quoted at the beginning of a movie, the verse is better memorized and returned to at the end. Next, the characters discuss the very first movie ever made, and it's not "Arrival of a Train," but "Sally Gardner at the Gallop": 24 moving pictures of a dark-skinned jockey on a running horse. The discussion continues with a discussion of the rider who did not make history, although the name of the director and even the horse are listed in public sources. With this dialogue, Peele raises the theme of erasing "black culture" from cinema by adding movie posters with Sidney Poitier (the first black actor to win an Oscar) to the interior of the characters. The director does not emphasize the "whitewashing" of the story too much, so the loud social statement can be taken simply as an interesting fact.

However, "Nope" encrypts not only important historical facts relevant to our culture, but also a reference to the great animated masterpiece "Akira," the remake of which Peele was supposed to direct, but eventually dropped out of the project. Daniel Kaluya wore a hoodie in one scene with the movie "Scorpion King," of which he was once part of the crew. One of the not insignificant roles in this alien mayhem is played by a Hollywood art-movie cameraman who is willing to sacrifice himself for the "perfect shot." If you juxtapose all these little details with the main storyline - the desire to capture an unidentified flying "gravy boat" on video, you can conclude that the movie is primarily about pop culture and the pursuit of spectacle. But it's never too late to go back to Nahum, either, because the flying sucker will literally throw mud at the characters at some point, and who will make whom look good is another question.

Jigsaw movies are always tied to a social agenda, but never in a deliberate way, trying to drum simple truths into the viewer's head. The director makes a spectacular movie, and in fact it is like a mosaic made up of little pictures: you can look at the individual details, each of which will carry the story, but if you step back a couple of steps, the whole picture emerges. And you can admire the picture for a very long time, courtesy of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytem ("Interstellar") who shot probably the best night scenes in cinema history.

So why is the film called "Nope" (in general, the slang word nope translated sounds more like "well, no" than a stale "Nope")? Many fans have tried to decipher NOPE as an acronym, but it turned out to be much simpler. Replay in your head the last few horror or slasher movies you've seen - horror movies mostly stick with white characters who go down into dark basements or go into dangerous places for the sake of curiosity, then turn into mincemeat. OJ and Emerald have one reaction to such situations: nope. There's a huge "gravy train" chasing me, should I get out of the car and see what's out there? Nope. Check to see what kind of strange creatures are running down the dark hallway? No, thanks. So even when a movie is saturated with cultural references, that doesn't mean you have to look for "hidden meaning" in everything. One can simply enjoy the spectacle.
