"John Wick" is an action franchise starring Keanu Reeves about a former hitman who comes out of retirement to avenge the murder of a puppy left by a man after his wife died. Pretty quickly, revenge escalates into open warfare against a secret organization that runs mercenaries around the world. By the fourth film, it becomes clear that John can only walk off into the sunset if he kills all the villains and earns his freedom. In this difficult endeavor, he will be helped by old acquaintances and even former enemies.

After the outbreak of war with the Board of Clans, hitman John Wick (Reeves) continues to eliminate influential figures of the underworld. A new rival appears as a young Frenchman, the Marquis (Bill Skarsgard), blackmailing Wick with an old and once faithful comrade under the codename Cain (Donnie Yen).

Wick is all-powerful: the series originated with the idea of reanimating Keanu Reeves' career, eventually saving, if not humanity, at least action cinema, which was on a well-deserved vacation after "Mad Max: Fury Roads." Similarly to "Max," the fourth installment of "John Wick" takes a deafeningly beautiful, rehearsed and patriotically true to the genre 2 hours and 50 minutes into a rich, grandiose, anachronistic reflection on honor, revenge, purpose and consequences. The timeless seriousness of "Wick" has gained irony, but the rituals still look like eulogies to both himself and all the loved ones that Wick has to say goodbye to sooner or later.

Wick is insightful: director Chad Stahelski doesn't reinvent the horse, but he does add it to the frame in one of the opening scenes. References to pop-cultural heritage alternate with homages to Dante's The Divine Comedy, Lawrence of Arabia and the anime Akira, choreographed fights and local folklore are admired, and everyday humor shines through. In a mournful coincidence, audiences are forced to say goodbye to Lance Reddick's character in the opening minutes: his character, loyal concierge Charon, falls victim to a new threat. On March 17, a week before its worldwide release, actor Lance Reddick passed away at his home, but his unwavering resilience, courage and status as the story's "friend" remained priceless. Looking at Haron's self-sacrifice, Wick contemplates his own demise as well, believing it best to be called a "loving husband" by saying goodbye to the world.

Wick is immortal: flying from the desert to Osaka, Japan, then to Berlin and then to Paris, John has an inaudible dialogue with himself, increasingly reflecting on the futility of the world and his own chosenness. If the "matrix" Neo fought in the name of humanity, Wick needs nothing from people for a long time, and with this bitter sadness the hero undoubtedly earns extra points from the audience. Standing apart is Wick's longtime friend, the sightless Cain (the marvelous Donnie Yen), who carries out villainous orders to save his violinist daughter, whose play he watches daily.

Both are well aware that they are beyond the reach of hordes of faceless enemies, which means they are too old to die young. Watching Reeves and Ian, you clearly realize that there are not many true movie stars left - they burn brightest in the hour of the apocalypse. Stahelski, a practicing stuntman who takes the equilibrium to an off-the-wall level, gives both of them carte blanche, understands this as well. None of the antagonists, whether Skarsgard in shifted outfits and Versailles gold or scary Berlin mobster Scott Adkins (a worthy rival to Colin Farrell's Penguin in makeup), have the slightest idea of camaraderie and code. Your blood is my blood: after dropping in on his gypsy relatives from Belarus, Wick rediscovers home, the red thread running through the entire movie is his sacrifice, only to ascend to his personal Calvary in a biblical way very soon.

Wick is doomed: Completing the film in a stream of looping cars at the Arc de Triomphe and the Basilica of the Sacre-Coeur, becoming the hero of an immaculate shooter without montage, John achieves perfection without forgetting his roots in the world of syndicates and endless carnage. Revenge is not the most Christian or noble concept, but in Wick's hands it becomes a justifiable measure, currency and salvation. "Are you dead yet?" - Cain asks in one scene. The answer is the most meaningful, righteous silence possible.
