The plot will focus on five mutant teenagers who are kept in a secret unit to avoid problems. They have to learn to cope with their own abilities and atone for the sins of the past, in order to save themselves, first of all, from the destructive consequences of the power inherent in them. Magic, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar (Mirage), Cannonball and Sunspot are not the names of new superheroes, but the personalities of confused young people who have to cope with their personal drama and not harm others.

Daniella (Blue Hunt), survivor of a deadly whirlwind on an Indian reservation, wakes up in a mysterious hospital. Her family died, and she herself, as it turns out, could be one of the causes of the disaster. So that the girl, who has not yet realized her superpowers, again does not harm people around, she needs to undergo a course of treatment led by Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga). Loneliness, however, does not threaten her, because four more mutant teenagers live in the clinic: bitchy Ulyana Rasputina (Anya Taylor-Joy), charming Brazilian Bobby da Costa (Henry Zaga), introverted Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things) ) and Raine Sinclair (Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones), who recently broke free from the harsh church environment.

The context of the creation and release of "New Mutants", oddly enough, in popular culture turned out to be more important than the result. An attempt to place the history of the formation of superheroes in the framework of a teenage horror, of course, aroused interest before, but the many years of waiting for the picture intensified it many times over. At some point, there were even rumors that the villainous Disney studio, which bought out Fox, decided to change the R rating (in our case - 18+) to PG-13 through simple editing techniques. This gossip was recently dispelled by Josh Boone himself, the filmmaker who has pitched the idea of ​​a superhero horror movie over the years. According to the director, the studio did not disfigure the author's concept, but re-filming and additional filming, which everyone took for the rude interference of the bosses-money-bags, is a normal and even pre-planned phenomenon in the industry.

This confession of Boone, however, only aggravates the situation: it would be better if we all together accused Disney and felt sorry for the poor demiurge, whose movie, against his will, was turned into an object of ridicule, as was the case with Trunk's Fantastic Four. Although if everyone remembered what the author was doing before horror and how he relates to the genre itself, the prospect of "New Mutants" would seem dubious even at the stage of early releases. The director of predominantly studio melodramas (The Fault in the Stars, Stuck in Love), he admits that he is not a big fan of horror films and focused exclusively on the mainstream: A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Shining, and Stephen King's books.

Therefore, "Mutants" for all its genre ostentatiousness (in general, a superhero horror is not such a rare thing, remember at least "Split" or "Burn, burn clearly") simply repeats the worked-out templates of already replicated films. The concept of the third "Nightmare", where children trapped in a clinic, fought a sinister killer with blades from dreams, adds up with characters and collisions from the school tragicomedies of John Hughes. In "Joker", following in the footsteps of early Scorsese, these repetitions looked appropriate if only due to the fact that the cinema got into the nerve of the public due to borrowings. Whether the story about the struggle of adolescents with fears, told almost a hundred times over these 5 years ("It", "Scary stories to tell in the dark"), gets into the nerve is a big question.

But let's skip talking about secondary. Even a movie pieced together from a couple of other classic films can succeed - ask James Wang. The problem of "New Mutants" is not even that they can neither comprehend the nostalgic context, nor correctly repeat it, but in the story itself. For a picture that puts a giant emphasis on teenage fears and nightmares, speaks of the subconscious and the repressed, Mutants are paradoxically non-cinematic. The exposition is a dialogue, the opening is a monologue, even the ending is a pretentious speech about how important it is to defeat the inner bear (one of the antagonists), who personifies his own weakness. And what is cinematic at rare moments looks terribly cheap.

Moreover, it is difficult to call "Mutants" the worst film of the year. This is not a slasher movie Doll 2 or a hundred other horror films that go straight to VOD - just a mediocre movie that works according to the template, but does not work in the end. Another studio craft, whose director, it seems, initially, without any interference from the company, planned to create a melodramatic motivational tinsel. John Hughes and Stephen King may not be outdated, but attempts to echo them are unambiguous. Who is to blame in this case? Probably the stars.
