The life of a girl named Madison turns into a real nightmare, paralyzing and shocking her when, in her dreams, she witnesses brutal murders. But what if night visions are in fact a cruel reality? Does Madison have a chance to prevent them?

Malignant 4K Review
James Wang has not always been the way ordinary viewers know him. Before working on the mainstream (which is not equally bad, note) franchises about the Warren family and travel to the astral, he shot wild genre movies on his knees. This, of course, is not only about "Saw" - although there the main horror director of Hollywood really dodged, trying for several sleepless days on the territory of an abandoned warehouse to at least piece together a cruel thriller about a survival game. The cameramen banged their heads on pipes and low ceilings, during the filming the group had to huddle in a tight corner, and during the editing process it became clear that the film was missing several scenes. At the sites of the "Conjuring" or "Fast and the Furious", you can be sure that such stories will not be found.

But there was also the debut work "Hellish" in the filmography of Wang. It premiered at the Melbourne Underground Festival alongside films such as Masked Avenger vs. Ultra Villain in Naked Bikini Lair (aka The Masturbating Shooter) or Narcosis (a cheap version of The Matrix). The picture cannot be found anywhere, but, according to the lucky eyewitnesses, the Australian director shot a low-budget phantasmagoric movie with a lot of practical effects - as stupid as it is charming. 21 years later, Wang is releasing his new film "Evil" (in the original Malignant - "Malignant" or "Evil", two quite correct localized titles, one of which even somewhat resembles the title of Stygian's debut) in an attempt to gain strength between filming " Aquamen "and" Aquaman 2 ". And again, a phantasmagoric movie with a lot of practical effects - as, as you might guess, stupid as well as charming.

The plot is the most typical for Wang's filmography. Madison (Annabelle Wallis), who lost her child after being attacked by a mysterious monster (before that she still killed her abuser husband), is discharged from the hospital. Friends and police unanimously insist that the criminal will be found, but the girl is sure that the monster is still roaming the house and will not stop until it gets to her. Every night, creepy sounds are heard from the first floor, shadows run along the walls, and soon Madison will completely begin to fall into an ominous trance: from the side, unable to move, she will observe how the creature kills other people in different parts of the city.

"Evil" could well be another horror movie about a haunted house, but Van apparently had enough studio projects with, yes, conventional stories. Now is the time to take risks. In general, the director himself positions the cinema as very personal and, in general, not devoid of a double bottom: firstly, it was based on reflection after the death of his father from cancer, and secondly, Wang considers "Evil" to be a pro-feminist film about liberation. Both are true - all this can be found, dissected, interpreted, in the end, if not laziness, even make some tricky video essay.

Only I don't really want to. These themes are, of course, important, but paradoxically, no matter how the director wants to bring them to the fore, they remain behind the screen of Vanov's formalism. The director's pictures, to be honest, have never been famous for meticulously worked out subtexts: Wang's art is palpable, tabloid, in short, collected from a heap of cliches, templates and children's film memories (in the case of "Evil" - about jallo and slashers). When all the twists in a film are reminiscent of plot twists from a soap opera or cheap horror movies from the 80s, it is perhaps really difficult to think about emancipation. Which, however, is not particularly bad - rather bizarre and unusual, given the tendencies of modern horror, striving for complex subtexts and, let's say, "art".

It's not close to Wang at all. He is an old-school director - an adherent of practical effects, a lover of shocking scenes of violence, and just a creator who thinks with plastics, not metaphysics of the genre. In "Evil" his interest in "how" and not "about what" is much more noticeable - after the Hollywood studio period, the director received carte blanche and, in fairness, took full advantage of it. Starting from games with genres ("Evil" opens as a film about a haunted house, then mimics a slasher, and then - a disgusting splatter and even an action movie) and ending with purely visual solutions like animatronics and cameras revolving around the heroes.

The further the plot of "Evil" develops, the crazier the movie becomes. Torn vertebrae and scalps, broken legs and ribs, human mutations and bloody nightmares - it's extremely difficult to talk about this film in detail without spoiling anything; only descriptions, interjections and commonplaces remain. But this ideally characterizes the new independent (comparatively "Conjures" and "Aquaman", for sure) work of Wang. I want to think about it not in the key of meanings and implications, but with some kind of childish delight: “Did you see how he killed him?”, “Do you remember that scene?”, “Did you notice how the camera was moving?”. Surprisingly, of course, the film, which was conceived as a feminist genre revelation (along with Wang, there are two women scriptwriters), has turned into another reminder that we are still children at heart.
