A Writers Odyssey 4K ReviewChinese cinema has undergone significant metamorphosis in recent years. The resources that the Celestial Empire invests in the development of cinema can be envied in most countries. At the same time, China does not stop releasing an impressive number of films focused exclusively on the local market - they make the box office in their homeland, but outside of it, for a number of reasons, they have little chance of attracting a viewer.
Assassin: Clash of the Worlds is a case in which the film retains a good part of the Chinese madness, but at the same time it is quite consistent with the standards of Western cinema. Yes, some actors are hopelessly overplaying, and the special effects are sometimes inferior to the Hollywood ones of twenty years of exposure. But the film offers the viewer a fascinating story, which, together with the creativity of its implementation, gives a light to the majority of sensational blockbusters.
The interweaving of stories that take place in two worlds marks a harmonious synthesis of two genres. The first world is a very down-to-earth dark superhero, mainly responsible for the development of the plot and the dramatic component. The second is the visualization of the novel of one of the characters, made in the genre of Asian fantasy. The film has every chance of being negligent for sophisticated audiences outside of China, but it is a pleasant surprise. The transitions between the storylines are made organically and do not destroy the integrity of the film. Assassin: Battle of the Worlds turns out to be an impressive piece with inventive visuals and a simple story to follow.
Directed by Lu Yang's picture, there is a sense of freshness, and in some places it is bold. The shortcomings described above are easily overshadowed by the strengths that make the film unique. Of course, the creators of 'Assassin' had to be more careful with the ending - it was simply not allowed to feel it. But if a continuation awaits us, then there is a certain degree of confidence that the authors will take on it with full responsibility. Already by this work, they showed that the Chinese mainstream does not need to copy Hollywood, but it is possible and necessary to develop their own.
