The year is 1959, where Ip Man lives in Hong Kong with his wife and his younger son. Trouble arises when a corrupt property developer and his thugs terrorize the school where Ip Man's son goes to. Ip Man and his disciples have to help the police guard the school day and night. On the other hand, Ip Man has to deal with his wife's terminal sickness, and at the same time faces a challenge from another Wing Chun fighter who ambitiously seeks to claim the Wing Chun Grandmaster title.

Ip Man 3 4K Review
It has always been obvious to me that one good idea cannot be milked indefinitely. Otherwise, a drop in the quality of the final product is inevitable. Talented directors dealt with this problem in different ways - the first threw their brainchild, completely entrusting the franchise to the studio bosses, and moved on (remember, though, Pirates of the Caribbean (2003-2017), which is five full meters and the sixth looms on the horizon) , the latter, despite the obvious creative deadlock, returned to the same story, until universal adoration was replaced by hatred ("Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008), prequels to "Star Wars" (1999-2005) and awkward attempts Ridley Scott to revive the universe of "Aliens" - "Prometheus" (2012) "," Alien: Covenant "(2017) - a vivid example of this, however, in fairness, these freight trains have a huge fanbase). Still others had a clear plan and tried to finish what they had begun on a positive note, thereby compensating for the secondary, one way or another making its way through a well-thought-out concept. Ip Man's quadrology, in my opinion, fits perfectly into the latter category. Today we will talk about the third part and find out how successful the next continuation of the adventures of the great master turned out. Let's go in order:

Characters:

Yip Man and Jong Vinsin:

Hong Kong, 1959. Ip Man lives a quiet, measured life with his wife and youngest son and popularizes the Wing Chun style. Now his name is familiar to everyone, and there is no end to his students. A grown-up Xiaolong (aka Bruce Lee) comes to him with a request to teach him martial arts. Then we are shown a short interaction between Ip Man and Bruce Lee, but that's it. Triquel is completely different, and the incarnation of young Xiaolong is just a cameo, like the appearance of Mike Tyson. We are transferred to an elementary school, which is terrorized by a local gang. Ip Man and his charges keep up with the police, and here the main drawback of the film emerges - the new secondary characters are absolutely uninteresting. The storyline with the school and with the relationship of the old teacher with the student who has beaten out of hand is sucked from the thumb and practically does not affect anything. All these cardboard boxes play unconvincingly (Leung Ka-Yan (master Ting) makes a terrible grimace and gesticulates, depicting discontent and anger, however, unsuccessfully) and worse, they waste precious timekeeping. Plus, all the leads to the battles are spelled out as if we were in "Mortal Kombat" and the local heroes don't even need a reason to cling to each other. Fortunately, by the middle, all the useless extras evaporate and we are exposed to the relationship between Ip Man and Jong Vinsin from an unexpected side, which in the previous parts were purely nominal. The drama in triquel is also top notch. Ip Man forgets about ambitions and devotes all his free time to his wife - moments of dancing, going to the cinema together and an ordinary family dinner are chilling (especially if you know the context!). And it works, because Mrs. Ip, even though she was walking in the backyards, took a direct part in the fate of Ip Man, motivating and supporting her husband, no matter what dangers might lie in wait for him on the way.

Chun Tin-Chi:

Unlike Taylor "Twister" Mylos, clumsily introduced into the narrative in order to show the banal overpowering of Ip Man and put pressure on the viewer's lacrimal glands, Chun Tin-Chi is an amazing antagonist! He, like the master Ipu in 1950, is an unknown genius who dreams of opening a school in Hong Kong and absolutely, like Ip Man himself, to glorify Wing Chun. Alas, poverty and shyness prevent him from showing his true potential. And then one day (avoiding details!) He casts aside doubts and goes on the offensive, sweeping away the bloated "old people" confident in their own invulnerability and their ossified control system that prevents talented people from getting through. Even if his actions are dictated by undisguised ambition, he is a man whose moral principles do not allow him to go beyond what is permitted. It is not surprising that it was Chun Tin-Chi who subsequently procured a separate solo project - "Master Z: The Legacy of Ip Man" (2018) (we will also return to it sometime later). The fighting scenes with Tin-Chi are, for my taste, the best in all quadrology. Either Max Zhang is such an excellent fighter, or the authors decided not to skimp - the result was stunning!

Atmosphere:

Apparently, Wilson Ip had to stretch the tape for a good 1 hour 45 minutes, so half of what was happening was meaningless. Again, don't get it wrong, we are immediately thrown a couple of significant events, Chun Tin-Chi is introduced (we see him outside the arena, we understand what he is guided by, we follow his failures and victories, in a word, the writers focus on him for a while, and this is great ), however, everything else must be endured in order to enjoy the whole picture. The magnificent staging of battles this time from the legendary Yuen Wu-Ping ("The Drunken Master" (1978), "The Matrix" (1999-2003), "Kill Bill" (2003-2004)) and Kenji Kawai's soundtrack are guaranteed to brighten up your expectation, the ending, despite all its straightforwardness, will definitely make you think.

Bottom line: "Ip Man 3" is an almost ideal action movie, the flaws of which are compensated by the desire of Wilson Ip and the entire film crew to shoot not just an hour and a half entertaining show, with all the elements that are necessary for such a genre, but also to share something more. Apart from the sagging first half, the triquel is a huge step forward after the objectively weak sequel, and contrary to the promises of the trailers about the "final showdown", there is a fourth (final) chapter, which I hope will decently send on-screen Ip Man to a well-deserved rest.
