Former special forces officer Mason (John Cena) is working as a lawyer, going through difficulties in his marriage and drowning in routine. The man gets an offer to work as a bodyguard for journalist Claire (Alison Brie) during a trip to a fictional country. The girl is supposed to interview dictator Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba), but things don't go according to plan because of a military coup. Now Mason, Claire and the mercenary-hunted president are trying to save civilians, make a quality report and just stay alive.

"Bodyguard on Freelance" is the work of director Pierre Morel, best known for 2008's "Taken". But the story of the hero Jonah Sina is different from the plight of the character of the avenger Liam Neeson. The new picture Morel unfolds as a traditional comedy action movie, where the shooting can not do without humorous inserts. Much of the success of such a picture depends on the star cast. With this in "The Bodyguard" everything is fine: between Alison Brie and John Cena is present screen chemistry. But, importantly, the heroes do not cross friendly boundaries: Morel realizes that romance in the story has no place, and the lack of clichéd move is more than happy.

Nevertheless, when watching it, you may get the feeling that all this we have already seen a couple dozen times. "Bodyguard on Freelance" could have been the result of an artificial intelligence that focused on the key phrases "ex-military with trauma", "poor southern country", "jungle", "girl in trouble". However, there is no point in judging too strictly the genre bubblegum. It is obvious that Morel's picture was created for a single purpose - to give a sense of comfort and distract the viewer from the gray routine. And, to be fair, the movie copes with the task quite well.

Serious issues pop up in the lighthearted plot as well. For example, the director glimpses the exploitation of poor countries by powerful corporations: the fictional state of Paldonia has valuable resources, which at a low price are eager to buy large Western organizations. Of course, we should not expect a more detailed dive into the problem. After all, the key line is the adventures of Mason and Claire - typical action movie characters, able to dodge any bullet.

The arch heroine Alison Brie is a vivid and even inspiring example of journalistic strength. The girl often needs rescuing, but she does not take courage. Claire bravely hides from criminals, managing to pull out an iPhone and record the ongoing chaos on the camera. Risking her life, the careerist not only tramples her way to the top of the profession, but also seeks to draw the world's attention to the big problems of a small country. Questions arise over another character, President Juan Venegas. The dictator in an impeccable suit turns out to be a positive character, which can cause dissonance in the viewer. Perhaps the authors should have dug a little deeper and told a little more about the peculiarities of Venegas' rule. We have no idea what sins are behind the dubious president. However, wouldn't "Bodyguard" have turned into a political drama? It should be recognized that the scenes with Juan Pablo Raba bring a drop of fun in the plot, which without such an image would look completely bland.

"Bodyguard on Freelance" could turn out to be another Netflix novelty. The picture organically fits into the catalog of uncomplicated action films of the platform. Yes, and watching the film Friday night at home seems a better idea than going to the theater. Pierre Morelé has created a movie pill with a short-lived effect: the adventure of the heroes will reboot the brain, but quickly enough and without side effects will be erased from memory.
