Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard 4K Review
After the events of the first part, Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) cannot come to his senses in any way - he still has not returned his bodyguard license, and he spends his days feeling sorry for himself in the bed of a psychotherapist. She, in order to get rid of an annoying client, invites him to leave for Capri and leave behind the bloody work. Bryce does so, but problems find him even on the paradise Italian island. Sonia Kinkade (Salma Hayek), the whimsical wife of the hitman Darius (Samuel L. Jackson), who was kidnapped by the Italian mafia, is pulled out of the bodyguard's vacation. She asks to help her return her husband.

This, however, does not end with the heroes' problems. Rescue from the mafia takes only the introduction of the picture - and then, just like in the first part, Michael and Darius (this time together with Sonya) find themselves drawn into a conspiracy on a global scale. Only the main villain is no longer a Belarusian dictator with the appearance of Gary Oldman (in the Russian dubbing, which is funny, he was Bosnian), but another foreigner with a recognizable face - the Greek billionaire Aristotle, played by Antonio Banderas. Otherwise, everything is more or less on the beaten track: the same humor below the belt, the same bloody skirmishes, the same wrapper of a real baddy movie, where characters that are not similar to each other are comically doggy, but still work together.

"The Bodyguard of the Killer's Wife" is made according to the tired formula of sequels, which continue the original picture, let's say, not in depth, but in breadth - that is, they take exactly the same plot concept, but throw in twice as many details. This worked well in, say, the second Kingsman, where such an upgrade was deeply (post) ironic in nature and turned the film into a crazy carnival of blood. In the case of "The Bodyguard", everything is much more boring: instead of two characters trying to sort things out, we have three, and professional feuds have replaced family ones - according to the plot, Sonya and Darius want to have a child, and about 80% of jokes will be devoted to this.

The film seems to even try to reduce everything to sheer absurdity (like, again, Kingsman) and thus protect itself from the problem of secondary: there is, for example, a funny mockery of the Freudian psychoanalysis of heroes (it turns out that Reynolds' character suffers from childhood trauma, and the reason this is ridiculously ridiculous) and all sorts of strange details like the one where Michael Bryce's father turns out to be black. But in his madness "The Bodyguard of the Killer's Wife" never goes to the end, rare flashes of absurdity remain foreign elements in his body. For all the apparent irony, the film, for example, does not at all focus on the absurdity of the mainline - about a Greek billionaire named, damn it, Aristotle, who wants to plunge Europe into chaos in order to make Greece the cradle of civilization again. Or on stereotypes about hackers capable of breaking into one communication tower and with its help blow up a couple of neighboring areas.

Worst of all, however, is that "The Bodyguard of the Killer's Wife", despite the extravagant plot, the movie is surprisingly nondescript. It suffers from the typical problem of artisan Hollywood action comedies, in which the actual action and comedy seem to be separated by strict boundaries. Of course, during combat scenes, the camera is now and then distracted by close-ups of the characters comically commenting on what is happening, but humor is almost never extracted directly from the plastic. Taking into account the setting of "little Europe", it is difficult not to recall the films of Jackie Chan, who also liked to send his hero to destroy narrow streets - remember, of course, as an example of how "it is necessary" to shoot such a movie. Do not hide stunt tricks behind editing cuts (in "The Bodyguard of the Killer's Wife" because of this, even conceptually interesting episodes turn into a nondescript stream of frames) and do not separate "funny" and "cool". All this with director Patrick Hughes does not work at all.

He relies more on text, on the comedic charisma of Reynolds and Jackson, on non-stop foul-mouthed Salma Hayek, playing the most cheeky heroine of the trio. To what extent "The Bodyguard of the Killer's Wife" works as a spoken movie, however, it is difficult to say because of the Russian dubbing - this time it is simply amazingly bad. Our localizers tried to convey the peculiarities of the speech of some heroes - which is actually a cool initiative in itself - but in the end all the "kukarachi" and "motherfuckers" from the lips of Russian actors sound excruciatingly stupid. The same with the Latin American accent Hayek, and with the Scottish dialect of one of the secondary heroines, whom no one understands by ear according to the plot (in the dub she speaks Russian like a stereotypical American, "chewing" sounds). Perhaps it would be better if the localizers continued the idea of advertising posters for the film and made all the heroes speak with quotes from Valery Meladze's songs. Let us dwell on the fact that "The Bodyguard of the Killer's Wife" both for the genre and for its own franchise is a definite one hundred steps back, and not even quietly, and not at all on fingers.
