Matt Turner (Liam Neeson) is a successful investor and a model family man. On an ordinary Berlin morning, Matt drives his kids to school and receives a sudden phone call from a stranger. The criminal, programmatically changing his voice, assures that Matt is sitting on a bomb, and if he tries to leave the car with the children, it will explode. Now the hero is forced to carry out the orders of the villain: to sacrifice his money, see the death of his colleagues and become a criminal in the eyes of the police.

Of all the heavy tests of fate on Liam Neeson except that did not fall on the torture of a passenger car (planes, trucks and trains have already been). Director Nimrod Antal set about correcting the omission in the movie, which becomes the third remake of the Spanish story about a banker who had his car booby-trapped. "Bash" thriller with Neeson is the kind of thing that multiplies unnecessarily. Seventy-one-year-old Briton again involved in crime and forced to step on the warpath - this time, thank you, a little in a different role: now he is not a high-class mercenary, ready to navalavala any bandit, and co-owner of an investment fund, in a word, a decent family man who was lured into a death trap. On the phone now threatens not him (the first "Hostage" everyone realized how dangerous Neeson is on the other side of the wire), but him. The film Retribution ("Retribution"), with a title as meaningless in the original as in the localization, is reminiscent of Joel Schumacher's "Phone Booth": a confined space, strained intrigue, a decent man forced to obey a telephone maniac, but with one "but". In the noughties, such pictures were etched in the memory, a whole genre field was cleared for them: a big city became the territory of alarming calls and trials, now such an approach does not inspire - "Hostages" becomes another craft among similar ones.

There seems to be a lot to watch: Neeson is not deftly arming himself this time, but trying not to make a mistake in a state of anxiety (especially since he has been considered a lone terrorist for some time), there are some contradictory points in the story - is the well-fed and successful co-owner of the foundation clean? Does it smell of blood money? And similar questions - an obvious leitmotif with an anti-capitalist pathos. Of course, rather hastily the intrigue is cut short when the movie begins to involve other characters in the plot orbit: the same negligent police officers and, finally, the phone blackmailer himself, whom the script has offended the most solidly. "Hostages" - a frequent case when everything is good and naboryristo began, but Neeson's car preferred to evacuate to the warehouse of genre stamps: the typhoon at the wheel gradually hardens and by the climax is ready to challenge the villain, especially since he easily surrenders himself with guts.

Tapes starring Neeson have long been star-studded, "Hostages" is also a grounded product designed for quick carbohydrate fueling. Camera flights along Berlin's highways, some explosions, a cool car stunt and a protagonist who doesn't even have to get out of his seat to be a man - that's the standard package of a phenomenon that can be called "Liam Neeson in the movies twice a year". The only fatty plus that distinguishes the movie from other genre rattlers is the cold, not-so-highly temperamental actor, who has all the grief of an hour and a half in his eyes. Instead of a British action star, it's a bit hard to fit someone else in here: Neeson is an expert at his craft, and will always find a way to get out of a mess, even if there are explosives under the seat.
