In the not too distant future, after a major catastrophe that struck our urban civilization, all life is concentrated along countless highways ... The road has become a way of existence. The origins of the main diesel-punk cinema franchise are well known: car injuries + oil crisis of the seventy-third, firmly entrenched in the head of a medical worker who happened to be born in a not the friendliest place on the planet. It would seem that from dirt and sticks on his knee, in the absence of a coherent budget, only a chamber drama, where there is an actor and a half, can work out well, and as a location - a room in a dorm where the director and the operator live. But no, the visionaries, as they have erected and continue to erect from nothing, whole castles and bizarre fantastic worlds that are so remembered by the viewer and leave a huge mark on popular culture. Culture Max is a great example of a world like this, born entirely out of the insane inspiration of a handful of people. He himself, like his whole world, seems to be assembled from dust, scrap and lack of money. Everything is so conventional, it is remembered only by what surrounds it, but not by itself. With his jacket, his Interceptor, his enemies. No, still not myself. As intended, Hostile Max is the avatar of the world he is in. A silent observer. And from film to film, along with a radically changing narrative, Max himself changes. From a law-abiding citizen on the brink in the first, to the chosen Jedi surrounded by bald Ewoks in the third. And among the series of questions that multiplied with each new picture, the most persistent, passed the test of time, there was only one: "Where is the madness, Rokatansky?"

Max always appears before the viewer as almost the only adequate character of the wild world, consisting of Mister Masochists and peasants who are trying to assimilate under their incessant terror. And the notorious madness was tangibly present only in the first film. Law-abiding Max was the main weapon in the fight against road bandits. The most audacious, the fastest, the youngest and the most similar to Pashka Priluchny is definitely the last stronghold of statehood, lying on its deathbed from the never-ending energy crisis. Everything disappeared instantly, except for roads and cars. The human world, as it turned out, is vital for fuel. Even more than a Human. And those who try to live in the old way will face a cruel retribution.

It is still difficult to call the first Max a dystopia in the usual sense, because due to a small budget, he was not much different in appearance from ordinary Australia. Unless no one fights with a kangaroo, and there are no spiders, that is, the world of Calm Max is probably even safer than modern Australia. And in Africa, I'm sure, the events from the second and third films of the franchise are still quite realistically reproduced. But the first Real Max is nevertheless, definitely an apocalyptic thriller, with a unique Australian handwriting and a taste of rust dipped in machine oil. A cruel parable in which Stormy Max has to choose between family and battle.

Yes, this is how science fiction was born on a distant mainland. Miller did not believe in the Australian film school, which by that time was almost not known abroad, so he was inspired by Philip Dick's books and police reports - a curious mixture in order to ask the question for the first time, "What is madness?" Subsequently, the madness will change, will reflect the preservation of adequacy in a feral world, but now, in the first film, it is intriguing - will Max become mad? Oops ... is the title of the movie a spoiler?

It's insane to make pictures about talking pigs and dancing penguins, being the author of a brutal film franchise.
