In the not too distant future, where time travel has become possible, a certain corporation removes unwanted people by sending them to the past in plastic bags. The host's task is to put a bullet in the victim's head, thereby erasing the unfortunate person from history. Everything goes smoothly until the main character unpacks the next package, revealing in it ... himself from the future.

Mid 21st century. Joe (Gordon-Levitt) works as an "eraser": he kills people who are sent 30 years into the past from an era where time travel invented by that time is controlled by organized crime groups. However, the killer is not going to fulfill the order for the aged himself (Willis). Both versions of Joe escape and try to change their future.

When two versions of the same person are sitting in a cafe and arguing about the paradoxes of time travel, the attempt of the older reincarnation to turn the conversation to another topic by declaring that he already has a headache from all these problems is perceived almost with relief. The point of this scene is to show that we have already seen all this and, most likely, will see it more than once. Puzzling paradoxes have been an integral part of the time travel subgenre since Mark Twain and H.G. Wells first closed the loop.

As in other recently released and much more weighty sci-fi action films (The Rippers, Surrogates, Time), a gloomy society is entirely and completely formed around a single technical novelty, and if we want to get into the rhythm of the film, this will have to be taken for granted.

Without a doubt, there were easier ways to get rid of unreliable companions than sending them back in time, where they are shot in a field that serves as a forest clearing from Miller's Crossing. Plus, a sociopathic mafioso with a monopoly on time travel should have far more ambitious plans to interfere with history. But all this is petty quibbles. Despite the plot, the intricacies of which are unlikely to help even a degree in quantum physics, the theme of the film is a simple emotional truth: if you go back in time and tell yourself a young man that he is doing wrong, the guy will still not listen to you. ...

Ryan Johnson, who directed high school noir ("Brick") and the drama about a love triangle among con artists ("The Bloom Brothers"), has already earned a reputation for directing the mid-budget films that coffee shop patrons love to talk about. In The Time Loop, he rises to a higher level. This is a dystopia about a society that emerged after an economic collapse, with an unusual division between city and country, reminiscent of the times of the Great Depression in the United States (the heroine has to defend her farm from vagrant robbers who have not broken off in big cities). There are battle scenes with flying motorcycles and huge cannons and telekinetic prodigies a la "Akira", but still of particular interest are the magnificent dialogues and unusual characters of the characters, which in this genre is often considered an unnecessary luxury. The creators of "Time Loop" succeed in what they failed, say, in "Surrogates", and not only because the world of the film is carefully thought out: its characters look believable.

To avoid complaints, Joseph Gordon-Levitt had to be made up so that he was sufficiently similar to the young Bruce Willis. At the same time, which does the actor honor, he does not copy Bruce of the times of "Moonlight Detective Agency" or "Die Hard", but plays a callous young killer in whom feelings begin to wake up and who may well grow into the bald character Willis, battered by life ... The latter, by the way, just like in "12 Monkeys", will contemplate the murder of the future leader of a criminal gang, who is currently still in school. However, director Johnson will find a completely unexpected answer to the eternal question of what happens if Hitler is removed. This surprise, however, will not be the first in the film: even before it, we will see several crazy scenes, among which there is one unforgivable act that stands apart, from which any less independently thinking maestro of auteur cinema would probably have been able to dissuade.
