The year 2078. Life on Mars has become a reality. Remmy was born on this planet and has never been to Earth. Her family lives in an isolated colony bounded by an oxygen dome. But when their home is attacked by armed invaders, Remmy is forced to face what her parents kept her from, and learn what Mars really hides.
Settlers 4K ReviewWith the beginning of the space race, which coincided with the long and debilitating Cold War, mankind began to set itself ambitious goals in conquering the outer reaches of the solar system, investing very serious money in its development and research. The flight of the first man into orbit was followed by the much more difficult and partly unpredictable venture to a satellite of the Earth, the Moon, and, as we know from the historical record, it was a resounding success, one that has been repeated many times since. Although there was much controversy surrounding NASA's lunar exploration program, it is generally accepted that the Americans did visit our satellite, returning back with extensive materials for further study in laboratories. However, the conquest of the Moon, no matter how grandiose it was, could not satisfy the ambitions of the leading countries of the world, which had set their sights on far greater achievements. The next goal of mankind was Mars, one of the closest planets to Earth, where, according to available data, it is quite possible to establish a colony. And ever since the arrival on the Red Planet of the first mechanical exploration vehicle from Earth, in the scientific community have not ceased debate and discussion about when exactly man will go to the Martian wasteland, and thus write one of the greatest pages in the history of our civilization. However, following the enthusiastic talk about the colonization of Mars, often in the media not the brightest theories emerge that even away from home, people will follow purely selfish motives and nothing good will come from the spread of humanity across the solar system and beyond. In science fiction, such considerations are not as common as encounters with aliens and the discovery of ancient structures on Mars, but in general we cannot say that the filmmakers completely avoid the unhappy theories about what exactly the colonists will do far from Earth. And one of these rather unconventional and because of that remarkable picture is 'The Settlers', also known as the 'Hostages of Mars'.
So, the plot of the film is set in 2078, when people have finally achieved astonishing results in rocket science and were able to reach Mars, where were built whole cities and villages. At the same time the situation on Earth is not good, so it is not surprising that many lucky people decide to link their future with Mars, where, perhaps, are not so picturesque scenery, but as a new beginning, the Red Planet may well suit. And this is where Reza (Johnny Lee Miller) and his wife Ilse (Sofia Boutella) decided to go. They were well aware that it would not be easy on Mars, nevertheless, the heroes made their choice and ended up in a remote house that had been abandoned some time ago by its former owners. Along with Reza and Ilsa, their daughter Remmy (Brooklyn Prince), who may have wanted to play with her peers, also finds herself in the well-protected stronghold, but for now she has to make do with the company of her parents. And, it would seem, this is far from the worst company and the family can honestly be called happy, but one day at the edge of the stronghold are unknown assailants who attacked the heroes and decided to occupy their abode. The clash is not without tragedy, and one of the attackers, Jerry (Ismael Cruz Cordova) now considers himself the rightful owner of the house that he himself once left. This means that the surviving members of the family will have to behave very carefully with a man who is easily prepared to kill and behaves completely unpredictably.
For director Wyatt Rockefeller, Prisoners of Mars was his first major feature film experience, so he could not count on serious studio support to develop his project. However, due to the fact that Rockefeller himself wrote the script and was well aware of the direction in which his story should develop, the film did not require a major financial outlay, and could get along with a modest shooting locations with the occasional use of cheap computer graphics. And in this case, the project was not difficult to implement, and it even began to look very important actors of our time, Sophia Boutella and Johnny Lee Miller, who feel great in Hollywood cinema, as well as in Europe. The most important thing here was that the story was extremely dramatic and really unpredictable, because when you let the enemy into your home, which is not easy to get rid of and somehow have to get along with him, this fact in itself becomes a tense thriller. At the same time, the director wrapped his chamber story in the shell of the Martian chronicles of the near future, thus creating not the most standard and quite remarkable film, which incorporates a variety of problems, which makes us slightly disappointed to see what humanity is really like and to realize the dark prospects of what the future holds for us by our own volition.
Certainly, such a story could well be played out on some desert island or, say, within the remote forests of Alaska, but the theme of Mars continues to attract viewer attention and it is no surprise that for his full-fledged debut the director decided to send his own hand-written story into space. Almost all the action is enclosed in the framework of a desert stronghold, which just by its appearance can induce depressive feelings on the audience, and with each subsequent scene the tension only increases, because the title characters find themselves in the very real trap, from which it is almost impossible to get out. A little further away, the lifeless wasteland of Mars awaits them, and inside is the enemy, who at times can and does show signs of adequacy and is even ready to help in a difficult situation, but his past actions and ambiguous hints make it clear that sooner or later he will cause another conflict that will not end well. Of course, there are some scenes which could have been omitted, as they take too much time, but in general it is worth admitting that Wyatt Rockefeller created a very intriguing action which has its ambiguous moments, but they do not make the audience crush his work.
In the end I want to say that 'Hostages of Mars' is a chamber thriller which, despite its modest budget and limited action space, takes on global problems. Through the example of one particular confrontation that takes place on a small Martian farm, we see how many irreparable mistakes humanity makes due to its selfishness and reckless actions.
