The film takes place in 2524. For more than one century, people have been colonizing outer space and star systems. Once on one of the distant planets, the colonists are attacked by hostile aliens. Then retired general James Ford and current employee Aaron Ryle, along with a team of soldiers, undertake to resolve the conflict until it escalates into a galactic war.
Cosmic Sin 4K ReviewDuring his long Hollywood career, actor Bruce Willis has played in a huge number of really great films that have literally immortalized his name. Starting with the first part of the unforgettable 'Die Hard' and continuing with his participation in projects such as 'Armageddon', 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Nine Yards', Bruce Willis has consistently attracted crowds of viewers to the theaters, who happily pay off all production costs of films with the participation of the beloved actors and brought tangible profits to both Willis himself and the studio bosses. Not forgetting to alternate participation in high-profile large-scale projects with more modest, but dramatically adjusted work, Bruce Willis kept a confident career balance for a long time, finding, in fact, the Golden Hollywood middle. However, over time, when younger and more challenging careerists began to step on the heels of the invincible John McClane, Willis decided that he just needed to take and earn money, saving as much as possible for a comfortable old age and the future of children. At the same time, unlike the same Nicolas Cage, Willis was not noticed in wastefulness and purchases of completely unnecessary things. That is, financially, the actor was doing pretty well, and his income from Die Hard and other massive blockbusters allowed him to build his career more delicately, but in the end he began to frankly spit on his own reputation.
After serving a number in the fifth part of Die Hard and appearing in the sequel to Attack of the Cobra, Bruce Willis increasingly began to agree to artistically disastrous adventures, which nevertheless provided him with a stable income. The actor could appear in the frame for just a couple of minutes, but his close-up face on the poster ensured fame for the project, which means that the film somehow got in touch with its viewer, if not in limited rental, then in the segment of home video. And maybe Bruce Willis did the right thing in terms of finances, but his name began to be associated mainly with frankly bad projects, which, of course, are quite in demand among a certain category of viewers, but in general the situation turned out to be rather sad. One of the most disastrous projects of the actor who changed his seventh decade was a fantastic nonsense called 'The Gap', which is rightly considered one of the worst genre films in at least a decade. But since the producers were apparently generous to him, Willis decided to continue collaborating with the key author of The Breach, Edward Drake, who this time decided to create another fantastic action movie called Star Frontier.
The plot of the film takes us from to distant 2524, when earthlings have long learned to conquer interstellar space and inhabit distant planets. Expanding their influence on the Galaxy, people formed the so-called Alliance, which leads the expansion and serves as a beacon of order for all lost souls roaming the vastness of the Universe. However, far from everything is calm. The colonists are faced with the formidable representatives of the alien race, which possesses unique technologies and is certainly not going to peacefully coexist with the Alliance. Everything gradually goes to the fact that the aliens will go to war on Earth, and the military leadership cannot allow this in any way. In this regard, they want to throw the best of the best into the upcoming battle, that is, soldiers who are capable of feats and making difficult but winning decisions. Thus, from a long retirement, it was decided to return back to the service of the controversial General James Ford (Willis), who in the past committed a large-scale genocide, after which he turned into an outcast. But in today's times, people like Ford are badly needed by the Alliance, and the old warrior joins fellow General Iron Rale (Frank Grillo) on a key mission to save humanity.
Of course, Bruce Willis repeatedly saved the hostages and even the whole planet from death, and perhaps it was interesting for him to once again participate in such a mission, if only the financial factor is not taken into account. However, counting on something digestible with a guest director and producers was not worth a priori. Star Frontier does not even come close to Armageddon and the Fifth Element in terms of budget. And this automatically means that the film crew simply does not have the tools to develop their ambitious idea into something worthwhile. Perhaps the story should have been adjusted for something more intimate and calm, but Edward Drake wanted to make a larger-scale movie than The Gap, and nothing could stop him. And because of such aspirations, the audience received a frankly weak, unnecessary and completely unimpressive low-budget science fiction film, which cannot please even the most devoted fans of Bruce Willis. Moreover, things were so bad with the means and imagination of the authors that they could not even really visualize the Earth of the future, showing us, in fact, the current planet with light interspersed with inexpensive computer graphics. The situation with space landscapes and battles is not the best, and when we see the next extraterrestrial species, we want this technical disgrace to end as soon as possible and show us, albeit boring, but at least naturalistic earthly realities.
As for Bruce Willis himself, his possible enthusiasm for the artistic perspectives of this film faded pretty quickly. And if at first there was an assumption that the depressive appearance and behavior of the actor was a tribute to the role and everything would change for the better as the plot progressed, then over time it became clear that Willis simply clenched his teeth and did not even try to present us with something more than a monotonous game without minimal spark. Watching what Willis does on the screen is frankly uninteresting and boring. His hero is stereotyped, and the faded performance only aggravates the situation. Things are a little better with the more energetic and young Frank Grillo, but this movie is absolutely unworthy of him, even though the actor himself is far from the lofty ideals of dramatic art.
