Not much is known about this mysterious sci-fi thriller, directed by the creators of "The Quiet Place" Scott Beck and Brian Woods. We know that the main role is assigned to Adam Driver, and the main plot unfolds on an alien and very dangerous planet thousands of light years from Earth. It is possible that "65", like "A Quiet Place," will be a sci-fi film with horror elements. In recent years, films of this kind have become a real rarity, and for good reason, because science fiction is essentially the perfect setting for a wide variety of nightmares. At the very least, filmmakers can capitalize on the audience's basal fear of the unknown. One way or another, "65" has already managed to pile on too much intrigue-we can only hope that it lives up to its billing.

65 4K Review
The protagonist, a pilot named Mills (Adam Driver), lives with his wife Alia (Nika King) and young daughter Naveen (Chloe Coleman) on the Earth-like planet Somaris, many light years away from our galaxy. Hoping to earn some money to cure Naveen, who is slowly dying of some unknown disease, Mills decides to lead a two-year space expedition. While the rest of the crew is in hypersleep, the ship under Mills' command crashes on a prehistoric Earth teeming with dinosaurs and other frightening creatures of the Paleozoic era. As a result of the crash, only Mills himself and the little passenger Coa (Ariana Greenblatt) survive-they are now forced to work as a team.

The project called "65" for three years teased viewers with an aura of secrecy - the plot of the film by Scott Beck and Brian Woods (who acted here as both writers and directors) was known only that it was a sai-fi, and the main role was assigned to Adam Driver. As is often the case in real life, along the way it turned out that behind the ostentatiously cryptic image was only an empty shell, actively seeking to appear as a big and important film. The lack of an adequate promotional campaign for "65" - is nothing more than a manipulative marketing ploy to arouse at least a primitive curiosity in the audience. However, most of the film's potential audience fell away as early as the trailer stage, when it became clear that neither the charisma nor the skillful fighting skills of Adam Driver - for a second, a former U.S. Army Marine - could take out the mediocrity and secondary nature of Beck and Woods' production.

The main problem with "65," of course, is not Adam Driver or even his little screen partner, Arina Greenblatt. The problem is that in this movie they have banal nothing to play - according to the plot, the pilot and the passenger do not know each other's language and communicate mostly with the help of non-verbal signs and interjections. The same approach could be found in another Beck and Woods project, the fantasy horror The Quiet Place, but there the lack of adequate communication between the characters was saved by the solid direction of John Krasinski, who masterfully built up the suspense and the atmosphere of mortal horror in the frame. In terms of staging, "65" looks more like a Discovery Channel documentary - Mills and Coa mindlessly travel around a frighteningly boring prehistoric planet (don't even expect to see any fascinating views of Yucatan Island here), shooting back at surprisingly faceless dinosaurs, occasionally creating the appearance of some dynamics.

Adam Driver tries diligently to fit in as Pedro Pascal, acting as the main protector and loving adult for not one but two little girls at once. However, the general poverty of the picture, coupled with the apparent unwillingness of the authors of the script to build at least the slightest emotional contact devalues any efforts of the actor. Under such circumstances, one worries more for Driver's reputation than for his character - after all, sooner or later Mills will fly away to his distant galaxy, and Adam must somehow continue to live in a world where there is not only Skywalker. Rise," but also "65."

Modern blockbusters are often scolded for their sketchy and secondary plot, their mindless CGI and their unrealistic characters - but Beck and Woods' brainchild can't even boast that. By and large, "65" has lowered the bar for today's sci-fi - absolute impersonality - against which even "Before Our Time" with Will Smith looks like an absolutely enchanting film.
