“Cinderella”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Jungle Book”, “Dumbo”, “Aladdin” (and soon “The Lion King”) - another Disney fairy tale comes to life on the screen in a new interpretation. This time, Guy Ritchie took responsibility for a nostalgic seizure - the man who gave us Boris Razor, Turetsky and Sherlock Holmes with the face of Robert Downey Jr., who later turned the way from the cozy gangster comedies towards commercial cinema. And at the turn to visit Mickey Mouse from his films, it seems that his personality completely erased. It is not surprising, because, having first arrived at Disneyland, even an adult will forget himself from the holiday reigning around. The name of the cult British director, although it is read in places in editing gluings and the cinematography drive, but his signature is so tiny that it is almost impossible to make out. In the diversity of Aladdin Ultra HDR, there is no room for authorial writing, so calling Guy Ritchie Aladdin Ultra HDR doesn’t turn his tongue, we have Disney's Aladdin Ultra HDR.
As in previous movie adaptations of classic cartoons, the plot practically copies the original, diluting it with new gags, relevant subtexts (the gay character in Beauty and the Beast, the feminist Jasmine in Aladdin UHD and the like), as well as a couple of fresh hits written specially for the film. With Aladdin’s musical numbers, everything is fine - both in terms of original compositions and new ones. Already from the first scene such native Arabian Night performed by Will Smith sounds, his Friend Like Me worthy competes with the version of Robin Williams, and sung actress Naomi Scott Speachless is very much in the spirit of the times. Visually, "Aladdin UHD" also does not disappoint. Variegated scenery, oriental costumes, riot of colors - Agraba has never looked so bright and attractive. Albeit slightly artificial.
Like any Hollywood film on ethnic themes, Aladdin UHD was waiting for a test with whitewashing charges: either Billy Magnussen's castes were considered an insult, then Naomi Scott was not enough Arab. But Aladdin was played by the real Egyptian Mena Masood, for whom this was the first role on the big screen. He did it with dignity, but was slightly lost in the background of the real stars of this film - Will Smith in the image of the Djinn and the Iranian Nazim Pedrad, who played the servant Jasmine. Smith owns a good half of jokes and fun (the second went to Pedrad and their tandem). As for the character’s not the most successful “digging,” this part can only be forgiven, because you cannot close your eyes to it.
Of course, the new Aladdin UHD does not stand up to competition with the classics. Sometimes awkward, too simple, naive and ridiculous, sold to a spectacle in the name of spectator entertainment - the film is practically devoid of personality for the sake of the mass consumer. But he does not pretend to be more, if only the budget has been repelled.
