Mike and Sally are the most experienced intimidators in Monstropolis, but this has not always been the case. When they first met, these completely different monsters could not stand each other. "UNIVERSITY OF MONSTERS" is the story of how our old acquaintances went from mutual hostility to strong friendship.

Monsters University 4K Review
Before joining Monster Corporation, Mike and Sally studied the art of scare in one college. And before becoming bosom friends, they were the worst enemies.

Pixar has mixed relationships with the sequels. The films from Toy Story seemed to climb onto each other's shoulders: each of them became more significant and deeper, and in the end it got to the point that adults burst into tears at the thought that some piece of plastic could melt. On the other hand, Cars 2 were all about nothing. This was the only case when the studio showed some semblance of cynicism in planning, changing its own rule “history is above all.” With relief, we inform you that the "University of Monsters" in its spirit is much closer to "Toys ...".

For the most careful, we’ll clarify that this is the first Pixar prequel, not the fourth sequel. And to shoot a prequel in this case is a rather tricky business, because at the end of the first film it turns out that Monstropolis, the hometown of all the beech hiding under the cots, is built on lies. Employees of the corporation went out of their way to scare the kids half to death, but they had to be mixed up until you drop, because laughter, it turns out, gives more energy than crying. So, purely technically, this is a film about how young people break into a cake to learn how to do things wrong and let the next ten years of their lives go to waste. This description is accurate and even quite appropriate, but somehow not inspiring.

Director Dan Scanlon, who is also one of the screenwriters along with Daniel Jerson and Robert L. Baird, understands this very well, and therefore his film is not about how James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski came to work for Monster Corporation, and even not really about how they became friends. Naturally, these lines are available at the "University ...", but basically this is a picture of how our heroes became the people (sorry, monsters) that we saw in the first film. And this is a completely different story, much more intellectual, and telling it is much more difficult. As in The Incredibles, which taught viewers that not everyone was given to be special, and that there is nothing wrong with showing who you really are, Monsters University has a clear and realistic basic idea: that, what you want to do is not necessarily what is intended for you. Such an idea would simply destroy the participants in the Star Factory, other X-Factors, as well as anyone who keeps books at home like “How to Change Your Life Yourself”.

After a tour of the Monster Corporation’s floor of fear, he wants only one thing: to become the greatest scarecrow in history. Fast forward follows, on his first day at college, where he enters a course of chilling. Mike does not raise his head from textbooks, but Sally, his classmate, whose family has generations of successful scarecrows, everything works out by itself, he goes on natural talent. Due to an accidental quarrel, both are kicked out, and both are eager to recover. To continue the story would mean to reveal many cunning twists and turns of the plot, which rarely follows the beaten paths, however, we note that the characters of the first film are very elegantly woven into the story, among them Randall, whose atrocities are laconic explained somewhere in a couple of minutes of screen time. In short, this is one of the best stories ever since Pixar.

Among other things, the studio also passes the test on comedies from college life, without any standard attributes of the genre, such as drinking, sex and public nudity (although someone may object that the main characters always go naked). However, other criteria are available: hostels of student fraternities (they clutched at the prankcase with Greek letters in the film with all their paws), university shit, and a terrifying dean, who in some scenes so convincingly proves that we are dealing with monsters, not plush toys , which may scare young children (and most likely their parents).

Perhaps the “Monster University” has fewer gags than the “Corporation ...”, but this does not mean that they are less ridiculous. They are based on observations rather than killer Hochma. All new characters are also good, especially the brotherhood of losers who are painfully sorry. With all his enthusiasm for everything new, Scanlon never forgets what his film is about. Even if the "Monster Corporation" did not exist at all, the "University ..." would remain a tape about two teenagers from completely different families who share a common goal. He is not trying to outshine his predecessor — on the contrary, he is enriching the Corporation. This is how the sequel should be.
