70-year-old pensioner Karl Fredriksen, who had dreamed of traveling all his life, goes to South America in his own house, suspended for 20 thousand balloons. The company is his boy scout Russell.

Up 4K Review
An avid traveler in dreams and an exemplary family man in reality, Karl Fredriksen spent most of his life saving money and energy on the main journey of his life - a tour to South American waterfalls. And only when life almost passed, and a nursing home began to loom on the horizon, 78-year-old Karl decided to go on a break.

From the unpleasant word "escapism", of course, categorically it is impossible to start reviews. Nevertheless, the story of how a groaning elderly misanthrope with a good heart, having tied a bunch of balloons to the roof of the house, flies away into the beautiful far, it fits perfectly. There are more escapes from reality than in any other Pixar film, and the studio’s most lifelike picture seems to be simply pretending to be. To the smallest detail, a well-thought-out way of life, as if a really inhabited house, is all a snag.

“Up” is a fairy tale to a much greater extent than the film about the rat-follower Jamie Oliver or “Monsters Corporation”. It’s a fairy tale because a determined pensioner expresses every second’s dream (to jerk away) and because it is more difficult to believe in the possibility of such an escape than in a robot who loves “Hello, Dolly”. Karl Fredricksen, with the light hand of director Pete Docter, similar to Walter Mattau and Spencer Tracy at the same time (sounds creepy, but in the end it turned out well), is actually Clint Eastwood’s animated double in Gran Torino.

The brave new world in which he has to live causes the old man to have heartburn at best. Uneducated children, annoying strangers, stupid smiling yuppies. But if Eastwood, in response to the errant earthlings, puts his dry fingers with a pistol, Fredriksen just flies into the Amazon jungle. For an animated film, the ability to work on several levels has long been a good tone. And for the Pixar animation, which in adults often causes more enthusiasm than in children, in particular.

Former "cartoons" have ceased to be just the perfect way for some time to stick a silent child to a chair. Now, laden with ambiguities, gloomy humor and complex allusions, they clearly changed the addressee. The anti-utopia WALL-E (the script for which, incidentally, was also written by Pete Docter) is a children's film to the same extent as Telepuziki is an erotic drama. The perfect visually and seemingly artless “scenario up” really works for children and adults.

There are no cynical jokes at all and in general the picture is too sentimental to ever be called great, but the delicacy with which the film manages to remain truly childish and preserve subtlety and depth is worth a lot. Karl’s journey in the company of a chubby Timurove Russell (whom no one called), the charismatic dog Doug in a collar that voiced dog thoughts (no one called him either) and a rare but somewhat slobbery bird Kevin with a passion for chocolate (and her ... understandably) - first turn adventure in the tradition of Jules Verne. A land on which a person’s foot has not set foot, unexpected (in moderation) plot twists, characters that this whole extreme changes beyond recognition — even a dog has to make a moral choice. All this is well written, painted, sometimes funny, sometimes touching the treacherous cramps in the throat.

But "Up", of course, is more than just an entertaining three-dimensional animation for family viewing. If your glass is half full, this is a movie about how dreams of a lifetime tend to dissolve in transparent air, it is worth getting too close to them. And if the glass is half empty ... The magical Eldorado of old Fredriksen is possible under the only condition: if this world is literally different, a dream, after which they usually do not wake up at 78 years old. The creation of the "Monster Corporation" Pete Docter was inspired by monsters who, as a child, seemed to be under his bed. Well, “Up” is essentially a tale that when monsters reliably settled in a neighboring yard, then a bunch of balls with helium is perhaps the most suitable option.
