Donnie Darko 4K ReviewThat is, on Kelly's modest debut, you can more than get everything that we just did not expect from the immodest Shyamalan and the aged Mendes. There will be a riddle with a solution, mysticism with scholasticism, Drew Barrymore with Patrick Swayze, the end of the world followed by a symposium, a lot of banter and a lot of context that is no longer even pop. Boy James Richard Kelly, by his twenty-six, has grown into the height of not only his small hometown of Middleton, but also big Hollywood budgets.
In his cultural-parody-youth-mystical thriller, all ends are brought together so neatly and end-to-end that no matter what end you pull, you just fall asleep, and you will no longer be high. Well, yes, boy Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), forever sixteen, in the late 80s lives in the city of Middlesex in an exemplary provincial American family. Mom is a climacteric, dad is a bore, an older sister is a whore, a younger sister is a fool, and a younger kid with glasses. The boy goes to school, where the director is a goat, classmates are idiots, a literary woman is a bitch, a physicist with a penchant for sadism. The boy is forced to go to a psychologist, because he once set fire to the school and is always rude to the family. A typical case of a young inquisitive mind being worn out. But Kelly made good use of the paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis given to an inquiring mind.
Once, after another rough squabble at dinner, the boy finally visited and took away a ghost with a rabbit grin. The ghost promised that in exactly four weeks 6 hours 52 minutes 12 seconds the world would end. While he promised it, the boy fell asleep on the golf course, where he was found in the morning. But while the night lasted, a turbine fell off from some Boeing in the American sky, crashed through the roof into Donnie Darko's bed, and if he were there: He did not ask himself why he was so happy, but he believed in a ghost ... He began to carry out all his orders. I hacked a bronze monument in the school yard with an ax. Made a flood in the school. He burned down the house of the Antichrist, who pretended to be an American folk healer. Etc. For this, he began to appear, as in reality, huge transparent worms, periodically crawling straight out of the heart of close friends and relatives. They turned out to be not just anything, but portals for time travel. Only how to get into them in order to blow forever from the standard fucked up? The psychologist prescribes even more pills for Donnie, and he draws attention to a hundred-year-old woman from the suburbs, who has been waiting for letters all her life that do not come ...
The old woman, too, will eventually be played, like the Boeing with the turbine, and the rabbit, and the upcoming Halloween. Richard Kelly calmly combines fantasy with creeping everyday life, as he deals with the image of "paranoid schizophrenia". But in addition to the diagnosis, Kelly calmly portrayed the details of the sexual, horror, satirical and funny. I stitched it all with quotes from "E.T.", "Evil Dead", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "American Werewolf in London", Stephen King and Graham Greene - then look for yourself. It turned out funny in every way at any given moment. It's funny that it's enviable, so many things have been invented.
But Kelly succeeded insofar as the base was for notions - the whole bunch of little aggression and heroism, a riot of fantasy and twist on sex, already awakened instincts and not yet curled brains, which is characteristic of this eternally specific sixteen. And the concreteness, in turn, came out due to the fact that age as a diagnosis is also seen with a certain vision. Do not take it for another joke, but "Donnie Darko" is seen through the eyes of that young bespectacled kid from a schizophrenic family, who has not yet grown to all this heap and therefore treats her calmly. He simply does not have another role in the plot, while his younger brother looks about thirteen - exactly as much as in 1988, when everything happens, was personally to Richard Kelly. This is where the "88th year" came from - so that the eyes were younger than the content. The content came naturally - what else can be a toy for the twenty-six-year-old Kelly now, if not himself "in the past generation."
It would be just to figure out why there are exactly four weeks with minutes and seconds before the end of the world, and you can not go to this movie for the second time. But at least once you have to go to it. One must remember oneself as a youth, a youth, a baby, and then even at a hundred years old, without any portals, the whole world will be a soft toy like a rabbit. If you remember yourself as an intrauterine fetus, then, I think, there will be no end at all.
