A huge green Shrek lives away from the hustle and bustle in his house in the forest, enjoying life. But, as is always the case in fairy tales, all good things end quickly. And now the nasty little Lord Farquad, the ruler of these lands, decided to evict all the fabulous creatures to hell. And, of course, Shrek's native forest was chosen as this "far away", which turned overnight into a refugee camp.

Shrek goes to the showdown to Farquad, and he agrees to take this whole gang back, but with one condition. Shrek must first find the beautiful young princess Fiona, who, as the lord suggests, will then become his, Farquada's, wife. Unfortunately, Farquad forgets to warn Shrek that the princess's dream is guarded by a giant fire-breathing dragon ...

Shrek 4K Review
Invented by Shrek and his faithful squire - Donkey William Steig. At the time of the publication of the book, the author was over 80 years old, it's time to rethink the past years. And there was something to remember! Steig made a name for himself in the 30s, as the author of comics about "Babies": his heroes were hooligans, street children. Later he preferred to draw animals dressed in human clothes. But these sketches were addressed to adults. It was only at the end of his career that Steig began to write fairy tales for children ... On which, by the way, more than one generation of Americans grew up. "Roland the Musician", "Amos and Boris", "Abel's Island", "Unusual Bone" - each of these tales was distinguished by a non-standard approach to the characters and their adventures: troubles fell on the fragile shoulders of mice, piglets and whales. At the time of writing "Shrek", William Steig had already become "the most-most" among illustrators. Just think, once he not only knew Picasso, but also managed to quarrel with him!

So, in 1990, Steig created the image of "Don Quixote" of modernity, which is not only green, but also born to be a cannibal. Instead of Sancho Panso, he got a talking donkey, but the trick is not in how Shrek noticed that the donkey is talking, but in HOW to silence him! By the way, Steig did not take the name of his hero from the ceiling. The prototype was the mysterious Max Schrek, who played Nosferato in the expressionistic horror of the same name by Friedrich Murnau. So Steig began exercises on the history of cinematography directly in the book. Not surprisingly, the team of Jeffrey Katzenberg picked up the baton, which exactly five years after the release of the tale began to prepare the script for the wide screen. And the story began to play with new colors. The colors of modern pop culture.

"Remove the dead woman from the table!" - Shrek yells as the seven dwarfs, dragging Snow White, get rid of their burden right in front of his plate. But it's too late ... The Gray Wolf is already lying in his bed, and in the courtyard the displaced persons have set up a camp. What kind of madhouse is going on in the usual swamp? Yes, it's just that Lord Fourquad decided to throw all the fairy-tale heroes out of the Kingdom, as unnecessary. Three bears are sitting in a cage, someone got twenty coins for the witch, three little pigs, a wolf and seven kids are next. Papa Carlo sells Pinocchio for a pittance, calling him an obsessed toy. Cinderella has been promoted to the category of "hot" marriageable brides who are traded by the talking Magic Mirror. The moral from Fourquad is: "Today fairy tales have fallen greatly in price and few people need it." But this is in the cartoon ...

And in life, Katzenberg has faked the head of the Disney studio, because it was the latter who served as the prototype for the arrogant lord. Apparently, therefore, before the release of the first "Shrek", the film's producer gathered a council of lawyers so that they consulted and delivered their verdict: will DreamWorks face litigation for pranks or will the company get off with a slight fright? It worked out ... Yes, and earned money. About half a billion dollars ended up in the ogre's piggy bank. A good warm-up before the real race, because the second part of the adventures of Shrek, his "Shrekini" and incessant gray friend only in the first weekend collected 108 million dollars - a record for modern animation. The final figure of the fees of the second part has doubled compared to the first - almost a billion US dollars. No wonder the guys suffered for so many years! After all, it only seems that computer technology simplifies the process of creating animation. Meanwhile, 20-25 people work on each character! And they just "develop" the appearance, but they also create the muscles of their heroes. For example, Shrek's face contains 218 muscles.

As for the "movie chips", then the scriptwriters of the parody epic "Scary Movie" nervously smoke on the sidelines. "Shrek" gives them a hundred points ahead. In the personal quotation book of cartoons, there are hits both of the 30s of the last century, and quite fresh ... In addition to the much-hyped Spider-Man, The Matrix, Masks of Zorro, X-Men, The Lord of the Rings or Impossible Missions "There are subtle allusions to" Wizard Of Oz "/ Wizard Of Oz, The / (1939) with Judy Garland," Cabaret "/ Cabaret / (1972) with Liza Minnelli," Cat Ballou / (1965) with Jane Fonda, Seven Year Itch, The (1955) with Marilyn Monroe and many other films. But even this was not enough for the witty scriptwriters, it was necessary to add fire. So they hung on the palace walls the Botticcheli Venus, portraits of living monarchs (hello to Elizabeth II), plus posters of pop stars like Justin Timberlake. The voice of the latter, by the way, in "Shrek the Third" / Shrek the Third / (2007) was given to the rebel hippie Arthur.

Yes, and on the scoring of "Shrek" the company gathered entirely stellar: Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Antonio Banderas (Cat), Julie Andrews (Queen), Rupert Everett (Prince). Each of them got so used to their character that one can only guess whether the animators copied the appearance and plasticity of the characters from them? You can swear that the Donkey smiles with a typically Murphish white-toothed smile, and Fiona has the same kung fu skills as the heroine Diaz in Charlie's Angels. In the Prince, the purely English arrogance inherent in Everett in life and on the screen is noticeable. By the way, for the entire time of dubbing the cartoon, the actors have never met in the studio.

But it was not without anecdotes. So, for example, Mike Myers finished writing the last line of Shrek: "To the attention of all fabulous creatures!", Literally on the go, in Katzenberg's limousine, which flew to New York specifically for this. Shrek's accent, according to Myers, the actor borrowed from his mother, who loved to tell him bedtime stories. In order to make Shrek's first declaration of love to Fiona as accurate as possible, Myers called his wife, Robin, into the studio. A trifle, but my wife is pleased, and the cartoon is good! Cameron Diaz not only voiced her character, but also added an important detail to her image, making Princess Fiona. burp as deliciously as her "monstrous lover". They say that this was not in the script, just during the recording with Diaz there was an embarrassment, but the authors liked the sound so much that they decided to insert it into the film. Antonio Banderas entered the image of a red-haired cat duelist so much that he took part in the dubbing not once, but three times! In addition to the English-speaking version, there are two more, intended for the Hispanic population.

Shot from the cartoon "Shrek the Third"
No sooner had the screening of the film "Shrek the Third" started, but the fourth part is already looming on the horizon. So the three directors, Kelly Asbury, Conrad Vernon and Andrew Adamson, will have to deal with the affairs of the "man-eating ogre" more than once, who in the near future will hardly be able to live "happily ever after" with his green girlfriend in his native swamp. Rumor has it that we will be revealed "a secret with seven seals" regarding the past of Shrek.
This means that we will find out how he came to such a life, and whether his emigration was part of a well-thought-out plan to capture the magical Universe ...
