ReviewLa La Land 4k HDR RIP
The musical is considered to be a dying genre, so the idea of making music movies in most cases is perceived by hostels as hostile. So it's more surprising to watch on the movie screens a new picture of Damien Shazell, who, contrary to pressure, did not abandon his dream and realized his ideas in his painting "La La Land" Was it worth it to pursue a dream so fiercely?
Los Angeles, traffic jams, drivers are signaling and trying to outrun each other. The guy, constantly rewinding the jazz composition, irritatedly signaled, outruns the gaping girl, which receives from her a demonstration of the middle finger. So begins the story of dating Mia and Sebastian. She works in a cafe and gives coffee to the stars of the movie screens, periodically going to screen tests in the hope of starting an actress's career. He is a pianist who plays seasonal melodies at the commander's bidding, but with all his heart he loves jazz and dreams of opening his own jazz club one day. These two more and more often come across each other in a huge city, reducing the two fates together. She shares her dreams, he - their own, but the stronger their love, the further their own dreams become about the career of an actress, about a jazz club.
A kaleidoscope of events swirling before the audience changes each other in such a comfortable rhythm that the interest in what is happening does not fade away for a minute. To follow the development of events is not just interesting - it captures with the head. The plot is conditionally divided into chapters marked by the seasons - winter, spring, summer, autumn - the season not only forms a conditional definition of the time of action, but is also a metaphor for the events taking place. The cold winter of the heroes immersed in themselves is replaced by a spring thaw of acquaintance and the next summer heat of relations, and then inevitably comes autumn conflict and mounting tension.
The film is made in the rare genre of musical history, where songs, music and dances are so successfully woven into the narrative that without them the film is guaranteed to lose the lion's share of its charm. At the same time, I find it difficult to characterize it as a full-fledged musical - the characteristic vocals and choreography, from which the film cheerfully starts, gradually come to naught, leaving only a harmonious musical accompaniment. Thanks to the Russian distributors that they did not rehash songs - the translation is in the form of subtitles, but the quality of this leaves much to be desired. The attempt to creatively rethink the lyrics of the song loses the meaning of the words being sung, and often it does not coincide with the phrase that is being sung at the moment.
At the same time, choreography is posed chicly - it's a pleasure to observe the riot of colors and images, but not only the numerous extras, but also the main characters can boast of excellent plasticity and a sense of rhythm. What a waltz, that tapping was a success for them.
Operator's work deserves special praise - the film boasts of luxurious plans and numerous long frames during musical numbers. The visual component also did not disappoint - the film was shot on a widescreen film (the last time Tarantino used it in his "Ghoulish Eight") with a characteristic large grain to increase the resemblance to the classics of Hollywood musical films ("Singing in the Rain," "Cherbourg Umbrellas" and others ) Thanks to this, the film is perceived as an artifact outside of time, hinting that the story could have happened both yesterday and half a century ago. Only rare phone calls of heroes return perception to our days.
Another interesting technique to pay attention to is a curious game with light - the creators obscure the surrounding space around the hero, highlighting it in a darkened background, thereby concentrating on the thoughts and emotions of the character - in general there are quite a few big plans in the film where the camera gradually approaching the hero, giving him plenty of time to reveal his acting talent.
And there is something to reveal here. The main male role of Sebastian was performed by Ryan Gosling ("Glorious Guys", "The Place Under the Pines") - inspired by his dream of a jazz club, he keeps a vintage stool on which sat Hogi Carmichael, photos of famous jazz performers and other jazz rarities in a cramped apartment with hoping that someday they will take their place on the walls as exhibits. He speaks with such passion and fire in his eyes about jazz that one can involuntarily penetrate his love for this genre. playing the piano.
The girl Miyu was played by Emma Stone ("Servant", "Birdman") and her character turned out so expressive and full that you are simply amazed. A lot of small details are added to the complex structure, revealing the character gradually, in small portions, each time revealing new features. , playing an actress is always a curious sight, and Emma, of course, coped with this role.
Young director Damien Shazell continues to surprise the audience with each of his new films. His track record already has an excellent "Obsession" and "Cloverfield, 10", and "La La Land" is another worthy work. An interesting story with excellent characters, elegant dialogues and dizzying visuals, luxurious music and exciting dances. This is not a story of love, but a story of a longing for a dream. Dream, which looms somewhere in the sky with the faint light of a distant star. Heroes appear in the life of each other unexpectedly, suddenly, flying away into the night sky of attachment further and further from that dream that each of them once cherished. Closer, they compromise and place joint happiness more important than personal happiness, which in the end becomes a stumbling block. Time will put everything in its place and the light of that distant star will flare up in full force for each of them, but for each other they will remain only a warm memory that will flare up with a bright and penetrating "And everything could be otherwise" by fire when She, a successful actress in accompanied by her husband, will be in a cozy club where photos of jazz musicians are hung on the walls, a vintage stool on which Hogi Carmichael sat and other jazz rarities, and He will sit at the piano.
"La La Land" is a heartfelt and fascinating story about dreams and their realization, about the fact that everyone determines his own destiny and makes a difficult choice to make compromises. What to go for a dream, to strive for it, to achieve and realize it can turn out to be uneasy. That the people you met and said goodbye can leave a gaping, irreplaceable hole in your soul, as well as warm, bright memories, to which it will be pleasant to return. Damien Shazell has shot a rare musical movie today, where songs, dances, love, jazz and elusive dreams merge in a splendid spectacle worthy of revision. He did not give up his dream and achieved the task.
