Thug Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) lives in 1970s Los Angeles and makes a living beating people up for money. One day, he is hired by a girl named Amelia (Margaret Quolli) to teach a lesson to private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling), who is tracking Amelia down. Shortly after completing the order, Healy is approached by thugs demanding that he tell them how to contact the girl. Realizing that he got into a dirty and dangerous story, Healy turns to March for help, and together they try to figure out why gangsters care about Amelia and why everyone who was connected to her dies a horrible death.

The new film from "Lethal Weapon" screenwriter and "Iron Man 3" director Shane Black boasts one of the best trailers of 2016. Perhaps only the "Suicide Squad" commercials make you more willing to pay any money for a first-run ticket or trickle into a pre-screening private screening by rights and wrongs. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in a nostalgic comedy-bloody neo-noir about under-the-radar detectives? Great "counter-programming" for adult audiences tired of pathos-driven teen blockbusters! But does the movie live up to its hilarious, driving and in some places unexpected trailer? Will it not disappoint those who succumbed to the advertising? After all, in America "Goodfellas" shamefully failed, collecting at the box office less than its 50-million-dollar budget.

Oddly enough, the answer to both questions is yes. Shane Black, who has eaten the dog on witty and entertaining "buddy-movies", really came up with and directed a fun and entertaining movie that evokes nostalgia for the madness of Los Angeles in the 1970s, even for those viewers who were born later and not in America. Don't be afraid that the editors included all the best jokes in the trailer and that the movie will have nothing to surprise you. Believe me - great jokes in "Goodfellas" would be enough for several such trailers.

We also assure that the picture is not based solely on the charisma of Crowe and Gosling, although it would be quite enough - taking into account that Gosling plays not a boring stoic hero, but a dumb epic slacker, who should not be, for example, drunk in the middle of the investigation and jump into the pool during the party - "to interrogate mermaids". Black's secret weapon turns out to be the young Australian starlet Angourie Rice, who is simply superb as the naive but intelligent and determined Holly March, the daughter of Gosling's character. As the partners try to get rid of her, the girl follows them, turns out to be an important part of the investigation and adorns many scenes with her presence.

However, the picture still does not reach the level of the trailer. For one thing, it's not as dynamic as one might assume. "Goodfellas" lasts almost two hours, and not all the time is spent wisely. But that's half the trouble. What's far worse is that the film doesn't sustain throughout the cynical tone it sets in the very first scene involving a teenage boy, a wrecked car, and a dying porn star.

Over-the-top jokes involving underage characters are only natural in an emphatically cynical and poker-faced movie like the memorable comic strip "Kick-Ass," but "Goodfellas" doesn't always conform to that style. Sometimes Black suddenly decides he's making a remake of Lethal Weapon and includes heartfelt scenes that are completely out of place here. Cynicism is cynicism, madness is madness! Sentiments in such a movie look like strawberries on a birch tree, because they destroy the mood of the picture and make you think seriously about what is happening. And "Goodfellas" doesn't need that at all, because it's essentially a non-serious movie, and even its bloodiness is comical, not tragic. You can't combine sentimental digressions about Holly's dead mother with jokes about the size of an underage boy's penis. It was either mom or penis - you had to choose! Otherwise, the joke about the boy is depressing because, taken seriously, it makes you see Los Angeles as the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah, doomed to God's wrath. And that was clearly not Black's intention.
