He quarreled with his relatives a long time ago - he devoted too much time to work, - of these, only the granddaughter wants to maintain contact with him. Just before her wedding, one of the groom's acquaintances makes Erl an offer, which, of course, can be refused, but not very desirable. He offers the old man - never in his entire life who has not received automobile fines - just to drive a car from city to city. And so that in this car will put his Mexican friends, Earl is not very worried. But he cares about the police officer Colin Bates, who was just transferred to Chicago to help cover the local drug cartel. The work of the director is, as is known, not for the young: the majority of them reach their full capacity by only forty or even fifty years. And yet the elderly in this profession are also not too happy. Near the end of life, many wonderful authors began to mumble, repeat, or even go crazy. Clint Eastwood in this regard is a particularly interesting case. His director's hand began to appear only towards the seventh ten, and he flourished as a director, and only in the middle of the “zero” - when he was well over seventy. And now, almost a 90-year-old Eastwood suddenly decided to discover new creative horizons - if not now, then when. Last year, his experiment was quite formalistic - he shot "The Train to Paris", where real hero-soldiers played themselves. The film The Mule UHD, however, was hardly heroic: most of the timekeeping characters there were talking about all sorts of trivia and personal unrest. Few people appreciated such a specific approach, and in the new film The Mule 4kEastwood replaced the form manipulations with a frank game with content - cinema, which at first glance seems to be the ideological colleague of his own “Gran Torino” (they even have a scriptwriter and the main characters are veterans of one the same war) turns out to be a ridiculous and tender "indie" about family, love and other wonderful things. In terms of mood and central idea, the Narcocourier is a bit like “The Old Man with a Pistol” - another 2018 film The MuleUltra HD, where the classic Hollywood cowboy was entertained not by age. True, Eastwood, unlike Redford, is here on both sides of the camera, he himself puts himself in the equation, and does not give the image to someone else's romanticism. If the "Old Man" acted softly and in a half whisper, then "Drug Courier", quite in the spirit of its creator, beats loudly and outright. Clint - like the protagonist - knows that he will get away with frank melodrama, sharp tonal shifts, and languid gazing at women's bodies, and even, oh God, what’s said from the screen is a forbidden word on N. Because it is already old, because he is from another era, because he is Clint, his mother, Eastwood, after all. At this age and with such a cultural weight, it is possible to speak aloud truths aloud - the main thing is not to forget to be sincere, possibly interesting, or at least ridiculous. The “drug courier” has no problems with any of these qualities. Eastwood perfectly understands his position and sometimes frankly scoffs. For example, he mounts the most piercing monologue in parallel with the way the main character is looking for a detachment of Mexican thugs - so that he can be very painful to be killed. The drug courier generally works in contrasts: excessive drama alongside a situational comedy, frankly genre thriller scenes against the background of general lightness. The dangerous world of drug trafficking is turning into a playground for him: Earl’s optimism and spontaneity (it’s not for nothing that they say that the old people are almost like children) soften even the most severe gangsters. In “Drug Terrier” - despite the seemingly sharp topic - there are almost no negative characters. The ambitious cop Bradley Cooper (he would often be distracted from Lady Gaga and his own narcissism) and his funny partner Michael Pena, their boss Lawrence Fishburne, the hilarious Andy Garcia as the drug baron - they are all cute characters and, in fact, rather comic. They are part of a great game that runs smoothly until there are people in it who cannot enjoy the process. It is in this that “Drug Trafficker” sees the main evil: not in drugs, not in cops and not in the terrible selfishness of Earl, from whom he is trying to wash off. And in people that take it all too seriously. In this sense, Earl Stone looks like a logical next step - yes, this is a ridiculous old man, often mistaken in the past, but he does not feel a break in him at all.
