Maniac 4K Review
An unshaven young man with dirty nails (Wood) meets girls on the Net and then kills them in a variety of ways. The hero also has more traditional hobbies: in his spare time he restores antique mannequins, however, mainly in order to attach the scalps of his victims to them, and then talk for a long time.

Director of "Maniac" Frank Halfun twice participated in the films of Azha as an actor. He has appeared in Blood Harvest and Piranhas 3D.

Young, but already well-deserved butcher Alexander Azha ("The Hills Have Eyes", "Piranhas 3D") continues to do what he loves and as a producer. "Maniac" could easily pass for an illustration of a working day at a slaughterhouse and for the abundance of blood certainly deserves a standing ovation from connoisseurs of the genre. It is all the more interesting that thanks to the triumph of the subjective camera, the picture also looks like the wildest mixture of "Jaws" with Prodigy's clip "Smack my bitch up". Throw in a perfectly turned out character - suffering, ashamed, touchingly washing his favorite knife with a metal frying pan brush - and we could have before us the most important film about a maniac since the days of American Psychopath, and certainly the best movie about scalps in the world (sorry, Goiko Mitic).

The only obstacle is the desire of director Frank Halfun to confess his love to everything. Even if we do not take into account that we have a remake of the 1980 slasher of the same name, every single frame seems stolen. Night car rides from "Drive" are constantly interrupted by obsessive greetings to Hitchcock and Vina. Moreover, the latter was awarded not just a few quotes, but a whole microplot: the heroes go to the session of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", and Elijah Wood even replaces Konrad Veidt for a second.

The lion's share of the picture's charm rests on the contrast of the good-natured appearance of the title character with his actions. But the former hobbit has to play not so much a person as his random reflections, and each time flashing in the mirror, the actor hastens to depict the entire palette of emotions on his face at once, generating not always the expected result. However, this does not affect the didactic tone of the story itself.
Walking the dark alleys with the same confidence after "Maniac" really will not work, which means that the authors still achieved their main goal.
