Skyscraper 4K - Will Ford - the former head of the FBI hostage rescue team and part-time war veteran, now engaged in assessing the level of security of skyscrapers. Once Ford is sent on a business trip to China, where he discovers that the tallest and safest building in the world is filled with flames, and Will himself is immediately blamed for what happened. Now the hero is on the run, and by all means he needs to find the real guilty, reclaim his good name, and also save his wife and children on the upper floors of the burning skyscraper.
Skyscraper 4K - adventure action in the spirit of "Die Hard" and "Hell in the Sky" with Dwayne Johnson in the title role. The director and screenwriter was Rawson Marshall Thurber ("One and a half Spy"), and the project producer was Bo Flynn, who worked on the "Rescuers of Malibu" and "San Andreas Fault".
Skyscraper 4K Review
FBI Special Forces Commander Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) underestimates the threat during a routine hostage rescue operation. As a result, many die, and Will loses his leg and resigns. Ten years later, Sawyer, now a civilian security expert, is hired to audit the tallest skyscraper in the world, built in Hong Kong. The upper floors of the building called “Pearl” are being prepared for the opening, and Willa's relatives, Sarah’s wife (Niv Campbell) and two children, are the first guests of the high-rise hotel. When Sawyer leaves the Skyscraper 4K, the "Pearl" is captured by gangsters led by the mercenary Bota (Roland Moeller). To force the building owner to leave his armored penthouse, criminals set off a fire in the middle of a skyscraper, and the family of Will will be blocked by fire. Despite his disability, Sawyer decides to break into the Pearl and save his family.
When director Rawson Marshall Thurber and the militant hero Duane Johnson worked together last time, they created an action-farce called One Spy, which collected $ 217 million with a $ 50 million budget. New picture of Thurber and Johnson cost two and a half times more expensive, and this is no longer a comedy, and the first in the director’s career is a dramatic thriller mixed with a disaster film (the heroes are threatened not only by criminals, but also by fire). How did Thurber cope with entering a new Hollywood level?
The middle half. If you look at the “Skyscraper” from space, then you can call it a competent genre film, which spends almost no time on foreplay, rapidly accelerates and does not slow down to the final. The villains are outraged, the Skyscraper 4K is blazing, the police and firefighters do nothing, and the heroic Will, despite the prosthesis, climbs the walls, jumps over the abyss, beats the scum of the scum and saves the children.
In turn, Mrs. Sawyer, who also has special training (the couple met in a military hospital, where Will ended up after being wounded), is not a limp “maiden in trouble”, but an action-heroine in her own right. The press materials of the film are called Sarah "mother-bear", and this is a very precise poetic definition. Although Will's soloist in the Skyscraper, without the efforts of his wife, he would have been defeated. This makes the tape particularly suitable for family going to the movies. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), Children will have to be left at home, since the film is being released in Russia with an age limit of 16+.
This is a view from a height. If you come closer and take a closer look, it turns out that the picture is amazingly stupid and ridiculous (one person is involved in an insurance audit on the safety of a huge building!) And that the action scenes are not as impressive as they should be in the summer blockbuster of 2018. Part of the problem is the absence of fiction among battle directors, partly because Johnson’s hero demonstrates athleticism more often than his ability to win.
While the hero of the Skyscraper was inspired by the hero of “Die Hard Nut”, the hero of Willis almost fought without a stop, Will then climbs the ledges, then holds a collapsing bridge, then breaks through the armored window ... No doubt that the scare Johnson with the image of a superhero is capable of such tricks. With the same success, he could push-ups or push the bar in the gym.
In the thriller, the main opponent of the character with such muscles and with such a resume should not be the laws of physics, but the villains comparable in strength or at least in brightness. Let us recall how, for example, “The Running Man” is arranged with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In “Skyscraper”, Will has only two adequate adversaries, and the hero is dealt with in the beginning of the picture with one of them. The villainous henchmen are too weak and few in number, so that the pulse from the onscreen bout with the audience will increase, and the main villains do not even have the charisma emanated by Alan Rickman in Nut. Roland Möller and K look like backup star substitutes so that the cameraman can install cameras and lights.
In theory, the hero was supposed to weaken and make the leg prosthesis vulnerable. But Thurber chose to release a life-affirming canvas, where a metal leg helps Will, rather than interfere with it. We do not mind - people in need need to be inspired. But the drama from this suffered, because Sawyer seems even cooler than in those films where the character Johnson has all the limbs in place. And the stronger the character, the harder it is to believe that his life hangs by a thread.
Position could save ironic humor. But, as already noted, Thurber conceived and put "Skyscraper" as a completely serious movie. There are only a few jokes in the film, and almost all of them are connected with scotch tape, which becomes a universal magic wand for Will. These jokes are remembered and turn out to be the best part of the tape - along with the exterior design of the “Pearl”, which is simply gorgeous. However, thrillers do not look for the sake of gags and architecture, but for the sake of what Skyscraper isn’t great at. Dynamics on the spot, family valuables, special effects sweeping and abundant, but staged ingenuity and tension
