2019. The silence of the tiny German town of Winden, where there have been no incidents for a long time, broken by the terrible news - missing local schoolboy, fifteen-year-old Eric (Paul Radom). Given that the teenager was troubled and his parents did not differ from the exemplary behavior, the citizens distance themselves from the tragedy, but a new disappearance - this time in the woods disappeared eleven-year-old Mikkel (Daan Lennard Liebrenz), the son of police officer Ulrich Nielsen (Oliver Mazucci) - makes us take the incident seriously. Especially worried old town residents, because something similar happened in 1986, and that tragedy, in turn, relied on the dramatic events of 1953, when the construction of a nuclear power plant near Winden began. Three layers of time, several families and a dark mystery are woven together in a dark history where everyone is forced to face their fears.
Dark S01 GERMAN 4K Review2019. The silence of the tiny German town of Winden, where no accidents have occurred for a long time, is broken by the terrible news - a local schoolboy, 15-year-old Eric, has disappeared. Given that the teenager was troubled and his parents did not differ from the exemplary behavior, the citizens distance themselves from the tragedy, but the new disappearance - this time in the woods disappeared 11-year-old Mikkel, son of police officer Ulrich Nielsen - makes us take the incident seriously. The town's old-timers are especially worried, because something similar happened in 1986, and that tragedy, in turn, was based on the dramatic events of 1953, when construction of a nuclear power plant near Winden began. Three time beds, several families and a dark mystery are tightly woven together in a dark history where everyone has to face their fears.
"The Dark is Netflix's third non-English original project, and before that, the video service had organized the shooting of the Spanish drama "Club of Ravens" and the Brazilian anti-utopia "3%".
For fans of television fiction this year we can only rejoice - after the long-awaited third season of "Twin Peaks", the continuation of "Very Strange Things" and the American voyage of "Chernobyl" saw the light of day another curious project, invisibly connected, no matter how surprising it may sound, with the three hits above. The gift at the end of the year was presented by the service Netflix, leading active expansion - "Darkness" was the first series shot in Germany by order of a streaming company and the third non-English original Netflix show. And it should be noted that so far the American video giant has managed to make a European voyage.
Gloomy forests of the German hinterland in the series played the suburbs of Berlin, so actively lived by people that the film crew had to fence off a huge space, so that in the frame even at dusk not get runners, cyclists and walking couples.
"Darkness" by Baran Bo Odar and Yantier Frise is called drama and thriller, but above all it's fantastic, and not as spectacular as any "Star Trek", but smart and even philosophical. There will be no (or almost no) impressive special effects, there will be no creepy monsters from a parallel universe, and the wood-hand will not utter inspiring speeches, but for a true fan of the most complex multi-level book series of Michael Murcock, Robert Shekley or Philip Dick sometimes enough fascinating idea and attentive to the details of its embodiment, so that the work is settled somewhere inside for a long time.
"The Dark" has everything to leave a visible mark. The series will definitely be compared with "Very Strange Things", but, except for the reference to the topic of 80's, the similarities between the projects are not so much. There will be those who will lay a parallel to "Twin Peaks", but here too, all the binding threads are conditional - with all the fantasticity of "Darkness" is not so metaphorical and much more specific. Finally, there is a need to dock with "Chernobyl", especially since the events of the German series directly affect the tragedy in the vicinity of Pripyat, and time travel is the main intrigue of the show, but the genre and style of the two projects are strikingly different. It turns out that for all the common facets with other series, "Darkness" has its own flavor and atmosphere.
And the atmosphere is quite gloomy, in this "Darkness" is much closer to Scandinavian dramas with their mandatory family problems, cheating, mysteries between children and parents, distrust of the state and business, the desire for privacy and not even face the neighbors. Residents of Vinden only at first glance are good citizens, in fact they are divided by abysses, they keep secrets that put other people in danger, the whole area permeates the threads of omissions, slanting views and conspiracies. In general, everything as you like, darkness is present not only in reality - there is almost no sun over the town - but also in the souls of heroes of several generations.
Even the most viewed viewers are unlikely to see in the frame of "The Dark" familiar faces of the actors, and the ideological inspirer of the project director Baran Bo Odar we know only from the imperceptibly passed at the box office of a cybertriller "Who I am", but the series is useful - you can not be distracted by the loop of other paintings and enjoy what is happening here and now (although "here and now" in "The Dark" is understood quite relatively). And enjoy without fear of being deceived - "The Dark" is written very carefully, played with talent and put thoroughly, the characters solved, the riddle stirs the imagination, and the dusky wooded areas are really frightening.
"Very strange things" in the tail and in the mane exploited the mass culture of the 80's, "Twin Peaks" carried away images, doppelgangers and the origin of Evil, and "Chernobyl" played in the alternative history and "popadantsev. Against their backdrop, "Darkness" looks whole and threateningly serious. So serious that you start believing in the secret doors of caves under nuclear power plants. And there's a belief in time travel not far from there.
