The Last of Us 4K 2023 S01 2160p HMAX WEB-DL

2003. A pandemic caused by a mutated cordyceps fungus begins worldwide. It causes the infected to lose control over their minds and their own bodies. In this rapidly unfolding apocalypse the Miller family tries to escape: Joel (Pedro Pascal), his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) and younger brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna). Twenty years later, most of Earth's population is dead. The remnants either live in quarantine zones under the supervision of the military, or have joined the revolutionary Cicadas movement, or hang around in the wastelands somewhere, alone or joining the company of some cannibals. The battered Joel reluctantly gets involved in another adventure: an unsociable smuggler has to transport a fourteen-year-old girl Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country. The teenager trusts no one, toothsome, but what can you do, she is the possible salvation of mankind, for she is immune to the contagion.

The Last of Us 4K Review
"One of Us" as a model adaptation of a cult video game

Even during the filming of the series, many people wondered why an extremely cinematic video game needed an adaptation at all. Indeed, "One of Us" came out back in 2013 and once again (perhaps the final) blurred the line between gameplay and movie viewing. Of course, even before its release, the industry had outstanding stories worthy of Hollywood: the blockbuster trilogy Uncharted, the complex political thrillers Metal Gear Solid or the western Red Dead Redemption with a heartbreaking ending. You can argue for a long time about what sets "One of Us" apart from other great video games, but let's just say it's all about ambiguous characters who talk and act human: interrupting each other, ignoring, arguing and often doing things that seem "illogical" on paper. The developers of the video game about "us" did not cheat and created a simple story about complicated people - about how, at the dawn of civilization, heroes learn not to survive, but to love, forgive those around them and especially themselves.

And yet, you have to ask, why does one of the most popular games of the last decade need a movie adaptation if it can be passed easily now without wrinkling from outdated graphics? Clearly, it's all about profit, but an interesting answer was offered by Neil Druckmann - the gamemaker of the original and one of the creators of the adaptation: he stated that after filming the series his parents were finally able to experience the story in a convenient format. In fact, the adaptation is aimed at the millions of the same are not familiar with the video game and not ready to take a gamepad viewer. Now they also have the opportunity to get acquainted with Joel and Ellie.

However, this does not mean that the many fans of the original here is nothing to catch. On the contrary, the series strikes a good balance between "adaptation" and "adaptation" of the existing material. The creators do not break what worked perfectly in the original: you can hear the music of Gustavo Santaolalla in the pilot, and there is a frame by frame recreation of the most memorable and successful episodes of the video game, like the drive through the infected city from the prologue. The series, for obvious reasons, cuts out level sweeps and exploration - there's less violence and exploring the world through found notes or someone's remains.

But the creators expand the world of "One of Us": first, the audience is no longer confined to the perspective of Joel, in whose skin the player lived the story - in parallel, they are introduced to his companion smuggler Tess (Anna Torv) and the head of "Cicadas" Marlene (Merle Dandridge). Second, they show what has been left out: information about the origins of cordyceps (by the way, one of the ways of infection has changed - penetration by "tendrils" instead of inhaling spores) or Sarah's trip to the repair shop to fix the clock. Also, it is already known that the third episode will be devoted to the history of Bill and Frank, and the fifth episode will show a new settlement, which was not present in the original. In general, the creators have trump cards to surprise even the skeptical fans of the game.

Before the release of the series, someone once again recalled the unfortunate curse of video game adaptations - as we know, almost all representatives of the narrow genre are recognized as failures. They say that "One of Us" has finally managed to break the string of failures. In recent years, the same has been said of Castlevania, Arcane, and Cyberpunk: Running on the Edge, but those were animated series based on the universe, while here is a full-fledged, often frame-by-frame and accurate adaptation of a single video game. And in its category, it really is the first such success. And it's so convincing that there's no doubt: we're looking at the best possible adaptation. It was made by people who love and respect the original, not by those who were willing to cram the story into a two-hour "big and sexy" movie.

It's not hard to guess that HBO is betting big on a new TV series that, given the right circumstances, could turn into a lucrative franchise with sequels, prequels and spin-offs. This is by no means an experimental project that should test the ground and let you know at the end whether video game adaptations, of which there are a dozen coming out this year alone, have potential. No, it's a full-fledged flagship project for one of the major U.S. cable channels and the forge of today's best TV series. It's too early to judge whether "One of Us" is living up to its expectations, but judging by the exorbitant ratings on user sites, it seems it is.

Viewers unfamiliar with the source material will probably recall John Hillcoat's "The Road" and Alfonso Cuarón's "The Human Child," two of the video game creators' main sources of inspiration, while watching it. Although the series is reminiscent not only of post-apocalyptic road movies, but also of "Chernobyl," a past Craig Mazin project. If you wish, you can easily draw parallels between the opening scene of "One of Us," where a scientist declares that with possible global warming, humanity is in danger of a cordyceps mushroom pandemic, and the mini-series about how a lying and ignorant bureaucratic system tries to quietly correct its own mistakes. Only in the new series, there is nothing left to fix - only to adapt and survive.

Despite fans' dissatisfaction with the choice of actors for the leading roles, so far there is no hint that the creators made a mistake with the casting: Bella Ramsey perfectly captures both the audacity and naivety of Ellie, a child who, in fact, his childhood was taken away. And Pedro Pascal is a charismatic actor who is finally allowed to take off his helmet again and abandon his stone face: in the series, he convincingly goes from being a sad man trying to forget traumatic memories to a hardened criminal with animal rage. There's also minimal complaints about the second plan so far - we wait with interest for the appearances of Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey and, of course, the duo of Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who gave the voices of Ellie and Joel in the game.

Probably the only disadvantage of the pilot, not even of the series, is Craig Mazin's unconvincing, lacking creative solutions, and the picture, either TV or amateur, which looks like it lacks color correction or a filter. You have to admit that the domination of the middle shots, the editing splices every two seconds and the dialogue shot through standard eighths look alien and lazy on HBO. Especially after "The Heirs" and "Dragon House." Let's see what the next directors will offer viewers - original source gamemaker and TV debutant Neil Druckmann, Jasmila Zbanic ("Where Are You Going, Aida?") and Ali Abbasi ("On the Edge of the Worlds"). Well, in the context of directing it is impossible not to mention the departure of Kantemir Balagov ("Closeness") due to creative differences - his filmography can be treated differently, but it is worth admitting that under his supervision the pilot would not be as stiff. However, the series is still a Russian trace - a large part of the episodes filmed cameraman Ksenia Sereda. Also a great reason to be proud!
