The main character, Todd Hewitt, is the only boy in the city of Prentissstown, inhabited only by men. After the war with the monsters, the settlers were infected with the Noise virus, and all the women disappeared without a trace. Now the surviving men can hear each other's thoughts, thanks to which Todd, on the eve of his majority, hears in the noise of other people's aggressive and suspicious thoughts that the inhabitants of the city are hiding something from him. And this is something so terrible that Hewitt is forced to flee, taking only the dog Mancha with him. Hiding from the pursuit, he encounters an unknown creature - a girl whose thoughts he does not hear.

Chaos Walking 4K Review
Many films had a hard time in the past year: on the one hand, constant transfers seem to reserve the opportunity to recoup at least part of the money invested for studios, on the other hand, large-scale projects risk "sour" due to the delayed reaction of viewers who burned out or simply lose relevance. Among other things being equal, "The Tread of Chaos" is a picture even more beaten by fate: the film adaptation of the fantastic trilogy of the same name by Patrick Ness has been wandering around since 2011. Before Doug Lyman ("The Bourne Identity", "Edge of the Future") sat down in the director's chair, Charlie Kaufman looked at the script, and Robert Zemeckis looked at the production, however, the final statement of the creators did not become the final milestone in the misadventures of "Treads of Chaos": after unsuccessful test shows were followed by additional filming, new editing and, of course, an increase in the budget.

In the (not) distant future, on the colonized planet New World, all residents have a distinctive feature of the habit of thinking aloud - a kind of literal embodiment of the affirmation "thoughts are material": judgments, ideas, fantasies take on imaginary flesh, so much so that fiction is sometimes difficult to distinguish from real object, or they merge into a polyphony of general noise, which, of course, must be controlled in order to keep secret what is on your mind. This is where Todd Hewitt (charming Tom Holland) has problems: he hardly manages to follow the flight of his thoughts, and when the girl Viola (the detached Daisy Ridley) appears in the neighborhood, all attempts to be at least a little secretive and completely fail. The stranger arrived with the colonists from Earth very handy, there is not a single woman in Prentissstown: it seems like they were killed by the indigenous inhabitants of the planet Spy, but with the girls in general in this world, everything is not so simple - for some reason, their thoughts, unlike male, do not leave their heads.

With one paragraph of the synopsis, it is rather difficult to introduce the mechanics of the universe of a casual viewer into the course of affairs, even an almost two-hour film does not fully cope with this. By and large, the blockbuster, fantasy-dystopian adaptations that have flooded theaters in the past decade are a leap of faith. No matter how absurd the initial settings of the alternative world are, the viewer is invited to believe in them categorically and uncompromisingly: are teenagers running through a maze? Do they go to gladiator fights once a year? Divided into factions of simpletons and daring athletes? As soon as in the head there is a reconciliation with such configurations, many questions disappear by themselves, but in the "Tread of Chaos" the much-needed assumption does not occur. Thoughts spoken aloud, the very procession of chaos across the planet, which, okay, exists on paper, on the screen looks like an engine that jams and does not start in any way. The noise either distracts from the plot, or annoys, or simplifies the logic of the thought process to the maximum and requires the removal of all aliens and spacecraft in order to leave only a boy and a girl who walk, wander and giggle when he once again thinks about that she is beautiful (puberty great and terrible in action). It is worth admitting that looking at Tom Holland, who blushes, gets confused and gets lost next to Daisy, is quite funny at times, and the notorious chemistry between the actors was also not without. But Viola itself is rather perplexing: outwardly she looks like a daughter (granddaughter?) Leela from The Fifth Element (orange pants with suspenders, a short haircut and refusal to speak at first), but at the plot level she remains a rather one-sided character and extremely functional (as well as Todd himself).

Strictly speaking, gender stereotypes, which are implanted in the head from birth and due to the specifics of communication, are constantly in the air, become the leitmotif of their march through the New World. Mayor Prentiss (Mads Mikkelsen) is honored with ultra-masculinity (no doubt toxic), violence and domination: unfortunate Todd does not allow himself to be sad, cry, or fall in love - it seems to be a very relevant attempt to stroke patriarchy against the grain and figure out what it is a post-apocalyptic masculinity that was quite groundbreaking for a teenage utopia published in 2008. But the voiced idea remains restless and hangs in the air, like other elements of the picture - the authors never get to femininity (no woman's thoughts are heard), and Viola does not particularly try to penetrate the emotional state of her companion and respond to his armored sensitivity.

Against the background of "Treads of Chaos", last year's project wins, much less ambitious (with a budget four times less), but clearly aware of its strengths - "Love and Monsters" (the picture even won one Oscar nomination for visual effects). The film by Michael Matthews also tells the story of a boy with a dog (Holland's hero is followed by a shaggy pet), who is struggling to save a girl in a post-apocalyptic life, where the Earth is teeming with all sorts of monsters. The cinema is purebred genre, without the dramatic intonations of the epic (apparently, therefore, absolutely sincere), successfully shatters the bar of masculinity, criticizing gender conventions, but at the same time does not forget about the charm of the story of growing up. This is exactly what Treads of Chaos really lacks: the soulful intonation of coming-of-age that can cure all the flaws of fictional worlds.
