Sean (Simu Liu) works as a valet at the hotel. The guy tries not to remember his real name Shang-Chi and his sad past, but he still catches up with him - through his oppressive father (Tony Leung Chu Wai), who owns the powerful Ten Rings, and his sister abandoned in childhood. The family reluctantly reunites to resurrect Shang-Chi's long-dead mother, who is allegedly sending distress signals from the faerie.

What from the description may seem like a phantasmagoric indie tragicomedy named "Sundance" is in fact a cursive product with a proprietary drive, humor and other exhibition of understandable human matters. Shang-Chi fled China as far away as possible from the unbearable childhood and widespread callousness of his father Wenwu, who from an early age turned the boy into a machine for revenge.

The reason for the inhuman conditions was the murder of Shang-Chi's mother by members of a local gang. Wenwu blames her son for inaction, although she naturally has no right to do so. Despite all the emotional burden of his ancestors (Wenwu lived for more than one millennium and was extremely cruel in each of them), Shang-Chi endured the trauma and refused to look like a relative: he lives in the States, deliberately chooses a modest job, loves karaoke, most often breaks away with her best friend Katie (the main comedy star of the film Aquafin) under Hotel California and only fights harder than all the masters combined when absolutely necessary. In combat circumstances, we find the hero already at the 15th minute - the father's mercenaries decided to take by force from Shang-Chi a magic amulet that protects from any danger, and immediately paid. To find out the prerequisites for such an abrupt visit, Shang-Chi flies home with Katie.

Destin's director Daniel Cretton is stepping back into the territory of parental control and the violent circumstances they choose for their children, most clearly illustrated in Castle Glass starring Brie Larson and Woody Harrelson. Unlike "Castle", in "Shang-Chi" if they manage to resonate, then painlessly and without krinzh-aesthetics - yes, with archetypes and tropes, with quotes "I will never let you go", colorful action, folklore and jokes ... In the representation of each familiar separation from the parents, they jump higher or deeper than their predecessors, truly finding themselves.

The film also works visually: neon fights outside the windows of skyscrapers alternately refer to Skyfall, Crouching Tiger (Michelle Yeoh, who always wins), John Wick and Wong Kar-wai's Grand Master. From the latter, the main Hong Kong actor of our time, Tony Leung, suddenly granted one of the most serious dramatic characters in Marvel. A man who possessed unlimited power, after a personal tragedy, became a hostage of illusions, refused to accept the death of his wife, bargaining with his son, then with himself, destroying cities, villages, and innocent people. Without the work of a psychotherapist, they do not leave such a bottom, drowning forever and morally sucking all the joy from those close to them. "It's your fault," says Wenwu Shang-Chi naturally, not suggesting rejection and willfulness.

However, Marvel has always managed to withstand the degree between peeped in real life and escapism (in a percentage ratio of 30 to 70), and Shang-Chi is hardly an exception, offering choreographic fights as a placebo, a freak show of never-before-seen magical cute creatures and one very famous a returning Shakespearean actor. Simu Liu and Awkwafina converge in an organic comradely duet, always ready to support each other, hiding secrets, and later repenting of the false identity built over the years. Here there is a huge space for the formation of a hero, through which borrowings from the same "Doctor Strange" roam - concentration, confusion, "clinical death" and the subsequent rebirth (bonus cameo by Benedict Wong).

Shang-Chi introduces the Asian protagonist to the Marvel viewer for the first time. The representation is back in sight, which is a historic victory focused on a sequel, and not the beauty of an "interesting experiment", as the head of Disney, Bob Chapek, put it about the tape. In his unexpectedly ironic Twitter account, Simu Liu replies to Czapek: "We are not an experiment. We are underappreciated losers ... ready to make history. " And in this modest rebellion, be it a hero from China or Scarlett Johansson with a lawsuit, there was no respect for the patronizing figure, as well as for abusive fathers with megalomania and perfectionism. In Shang Chi, children ask their fathers to support them and not ignore problems. It turns out, frankly, not always, but in this vulnerability the film finds irrefutable strength, both supernatural and completely human.
