In the special screenings of Cannes 2023, the premieres of both Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" and Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" were predicted, but two impressive releases passed the festival selections, and the place of the people's blockbuster was taken by the new part of the adventures of Indiana Jones with the subtitle "Wheel of Fate". The tape is also expected, but expected as if by inertia: "The Crystal Skull" has already once returned the famous archaeologist in a hat to the big screens; the kamback even led by the captain of the franchise Steven Spielberg was accepted without too many honors. But it's been another decade, which means loyal fans have had time to get bored and producers' pockets have had time to empty.

How many more adventure novels can be composed about the indefatigable historian in search of treasure and stories that will want to tell students at lectures? By and large - as many as you like! After the fourth film, the adventures were supposed to be inherited by Matt (Indy's son, played by Shia LaBaffe), but the audience's love did not work out, and the place of the young seeker of great wealth and big problems was taken by Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) - a follower of Indiana Jones from the world of video games, who finally reached the theater screens.

With continuity failing, Disney decided to pull off what the studio has been doing best lately: riding the dead horse of an iconic franchise. After a flashback that dutifully showcases a sprawling and lengthy chase (Nazis! train! artifact!) and quite convincing rejuvenation possibilities, "Wheel of Fate" turns to Professor Jones' retirement send-off in the '70s. The calm and despondency lasts about ten minutes at most: Indy doesn't even have time to empty his glass before Wombat (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Jones' goddaughter, shows up with yet another legend about yet another bling that this time will help him travel through time. There will also be bad guys who need the marvelous macguffin. The leader of the Nazi scoundrels is Mads Mikkelsen, who shone in the opening scene (but the most charismatic villain will be one of his sidekicks played by Boyd Holbrook).

It's pretty hard to put into words the tangible difference between genre predictability, which can be both comfortable and tedious. In retelling, "Wheel of Fate" offers exactly what is required: a series of spectacular chases (we leave a separate compliment to the moray eels), picture-perfect shootouts, endless forward motion on all modes of transportation, a valuable treasure with a magical charge, and harmless punchlines. Phoebe Waller-Bridge deftly jumps into the role of the huntress for a planetary-scale world discovery, director James Mangold diligently copies Spielberg's close-ups and transitions, and Mads Mikkelsen reproduces the crowning villain's squint.

But the roundelay of genre techniques lacks a grain of magic common to adventure films. Nothing is born in the meat grinder of familiar tags: no chemistry, no attraction, no cinematic hooliganism, no heart-stopping mystery. "Wheel of Fate" neither angers nor pleases, neither disappoints nor falls in love: one gets the feeling that for all its positively charged attributes, the film is completely devoid of taste, color and smell. It's like a drawn-out commercial with old familiar characters during a Super Bowl broadcast. You can't get excited about the archaeologists on the run, nor enthusiastically follow the ups and downs, nor get involved in the vicissitudes of the artifact that everyone involved is juggling (and it's probably not just because you managed to get to the 8:30 a.m. screening). The recognizability doesn't tickle nostalgic nerves (though of course there are those very same cameos), but rather induces an unpleasant sense of deja vu.

The only indestructible and powerful value of the conveyor belt production remains Harrison Ford, who is not broken neither by age, nor by a mediocrely written script, nor by prosaic directing. The last Hollywood star of the classic model is called Tom Cruise, but no matter how much Ethan Hunt no matter how much jumping on airplanes, he does not compare organically and breed with Harrison Ford, who is great, even when just sitting in a chair. On the set of "Star Wars" Carrie Fisher soon fell in love with a colleague and later said of him: "When I first saw Harrison Ford, I thought: this guy will be a star, not just a celebrity, but a real star. He's got a Humphrey Bogart type. He had a kind of epic energy, and he was totally out of my league. Compared to him, I wasn't even in my league." Time passes, and the status does not change: Ford with genuine dignity holds the whip and saddles a horse in the center of the city. But the artist has absolutely no need for sentimental postscripts to iconic characters, that Jones or Han Sol - the heroes are already beloved forever.
