Overlord 4k In the center of the plot are two paratroopers, whose mission is the destruction of the radio tower of the Germans during the "D". The film Overlord 4k was the first project produced by JJ Abrams Bad Robot, sharpened under the harsh rating of R. Directed by Julius Avery ("Young Blood"), the script was written by Mark L. Smith ("Survivor") based on the idea of Billy Ray and J.J. . Abrams.

Overlord 4K Review

American troops are planning to land in Normandy, which should finally turn the war in favor of the allies. But in order for airplanes to help the infantry advance deep into France, you must first turn off the jamming tower in a French village. Several planes are sent there, but only five of them survive during the shelling of dozens or even hundreds of soldiers (those who are finished off on the ground are not considered). They will have to blow up the tower, surrounded by a much higher number of Nazis. And zombies. Because there are zombies here.

Overlord 4K begins - as it should be a model military film - with the landing in the rear of the enemy and the plane crash. Everything around is beautifully exploding, people screaming, commanders are pushing pompous speeches. Massacre begins, and only the most archetypal characters live to see the events of the film. In fact, Trus, Balbes and Byvaliy, except that there are two underpants here - one of them, by the way, is our main character.

Then everything is still on the beaten track: a small French village, dear ally, a mysterious laboratory, standing exactly under the place that the heroes need to blow up to hell. But, surprisingly, with such unimpressive components, the first half of Overlord is its best part. Director Julius Avery is very good at styling a movie with such a retro-style poster: even the company’s name and logos are made for old TV shows. Having accepted some conventions, you begin to perceive its history as a kind of heroic story - and what was cliché turns into homage.

Avery has a very confident production for a person who is a beginner in a big movie. In his hands, the chamber story of a small but important operation acquires the scale of the event that is fatal and comprehensive. Here, even claustrophobic locations from the last third of the film do not cause the desire to run out of the room to fresh air. For the time being, his film looks like a simple but convincing one — thanks to the directors and actors — a love card for an old military movie. But then for some reason there are zombies.

Not that the appearance of live dead carcass "Overlord" suddenly abruptly loses its position and turns into something unintelligible. This is still a well-executed movie with at least excellent practical effects (everything that concerns detached limbs and other physical atrocities is the highest class, Cronenberg approves). As a maximum - with some kind of personal drama and, excuse me, “chemistry” between the characters.

But his pleasant retronostalgia disappears very quickly when, instead of the idols in the Nazi form, the heroes have to deal with snarling idols in the Nazi form. The plot twist with the zombies intends to refresh the picture, but it does exactly the opposite - after some “Dead Snow Operations”, it is impossible to perceive this without a hint of healthy irony. Overlord 4K irony is just not enough: everything that concerns the living dead, here is done with an incredibly serious facial expression. But even the supreme Call of Duty in their zombie modes realized that without a smirk about Nazi experiments and expressive officers with delusions of grandeur it is not worth telling. What prevented producer JJ Abrams from reaching this simple thought is not entirely clear.

The film diligently avoids what can make it more fun. There are zombies - so let's ignore them, let the characters pretend that everything is fine. The revived rotten corpses of the soldiers are much less surprising than the spectators: well, a little scary, yes, but at the end of the day, it’s up to whom to kill. There are colorful heroes, including Wyatt Russell - the poured out father, both externally and in charisma - no, it’s better to put in the center of the history of a morally enriched loot who almost never kills enemies, but only gently bangs them on the head with the butt.

The main character, Boyce, is probably the main drawback of Overlord. His annoying correctness makes the character completely inanimate - he is the same zombie, like all the walking dead in the film. And no, there is no funny metaphor on this subject at Overlord.
