A group of Norwegian polar explorers stumble upon a flying saucer in the ice. Biological scientists (Winstead and Thomsen), urgently called to the scene of the incident, extract fragments of an incomprehensible creature from a huge ice cube. But during the banquet in honor of the upcoming Nobel Prize, the creature comes to its senses and begins to kill everyone.

Those who pray for Carpenter's classic 1982 horror film will be moved by the respect, one might even say admiration, with which director Matthis van Heinigen Jr. recreates the details that flickered in the original. The film is reminiscent of a genre fan's dream come to life, who was entrusted with the backstory of his favorite film. It all started with a dog and a helicopter? Please, we will end with them. Was the remains of a two-headed man lying on a burned-out Norwegian base? Please show how he became two-headed.

True, this inevitably leads to the fact that the new "Thing" / The Thing / (2011) does not just play in the same register, but in places looks more like a remake. Here you have a detailed autopsy scene, and a collective check of each other for aliens, and a bunch of other dramatically identical conflicts. But are remakes filmed for the sake of originality? Or buying a ticket at the cinema, someone does not fully understand what he is going to?

The authors rightly reasoned that trying to find a literal replacement for Kurt Russell is pointless - a young militant hero of his caliber can only be found frozen somewhere in Antarctica (we do not take into account pensioner epics like "The Expendables"). So instead of one MacRady, we will now have two at once - the brutal stationmaster Joel Edgerton and the woman scientist Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Seeing an actress who can completely change facial expressions from picture to picture and equally successfully be at least a sex bomb (American Grindhouse / (2010)), even a marginal teenager (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World / (2010)), in a film about the relationship of the spleen with a flamethrower, it is at least strange. On the other hand, giving a woman the lead in the traditionally male world of polar explorers is a pretty useful idea. The confrontation between a fragile girl and an incomprehensible creature should scare even more, and in fact the film lacks real horror. Anyone who has watched at least heels of horror stories in his life will guess in advance the outcome of each "intense" scene. But it is strongly discouraged for those who are especially sensitive before watching, to eat tightly, in terms of the squelching abomination "Something" goes beyond all conceivable boundaries.
