The long-standing confrontation between two strong personalities will now unfold against the backdrop of the Federation's secret experiments on terraforming planets.

But this time, Kirk will have to defeat, whatever the cost, and he will have to start by defeating his own ego ...

So I continue to get acquainted with the Star Trek universe, the first film was lumpy, but I am an optimist, so I hoped for the best.

I have long been accustomed to the rule: "Continuation is inferior to the original", it usually works, but not always, there are very good exceptions: "Terminator" "Aliens" and including "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan".

The first film based on the TV series of the same name did not receive the most approving reviews from critics and ordinary viewers. The special effects were not very good even at that time, the script was weak, and the main thing was that the film was incredibly boring and dreary to watch. But the continuation corrected some of the shortcomings, although there were concerns, and very serious ones.

Instead of the classic of cinema Robert Wise, they put a young director Nicholas Meyer with less experience in the director's chair. The film's budget was cut substantially from $ 35 million to $ 11 million. But the film turned out to be significantly better than its predecessor.

Firstly, it is not so boring, although it would be a stretch to call it dynamic, but it has become much easier to watch.

Secondly, an interesting and somewhat confusing plot appeared. Now the Enterprise's crew is not saving the poor Earth, but their skins and unraveling the tangle of events. A normal villain has appeared - a certain superhuman Khan, who wants revenge on Captain Kirk.

The script has become much more thoughtful, I did not notice any connections. There is much more philosophy.

The actors play great, especially William Shatner, Ricardo Montalban, Leonard Nimoy, Kirsty Ellie. Psychology has become much more, now Kirk is not a superman, but an ordinary person, with his own shortcomings and sins behind his soul. More attention is paid not to silly flights across the galaxy, but to the heroes themselves, perhaps this series is the most human.

The film turned out to be much darker and even tragic than the first part, and even more so the series. The atmosphere has changed, but still similar in spirit to the original. There was more cruelty and blood.

Despite the modest budget, the special effects were much more pleasing than in the first film. If in the 1979 version the creators set the bar too high and failed, here the graphics look very organic and spectacular. The Enterprise itself is excellently made. Although some moments look pretty funny now, the picture looks much better. Camera work at height.

The music has changed, now the soundtrack is written by James Horner. By the way, it was he who also wrote the music for "Titanic" and "Avatar", and such happiness is very rare. The compositions are not so annoying, but at the same time, they are remembered faster.

But in the end everything turned out to be a little blurry, as in the first part. Just the opposite. And what happened to one of the heroes was very upsetting.

Silly note: the Enterprise's crew suits have changed in color and are more attractive. although it must have been hot to walk in them.
