From the depths of space, through the Klingon sector, an unidentified object of simply gigantic proportions with unclear, but possibly hostile intentions, calling itself "Vijer", is approaching the Earth; and the Enterprise turns out to be the only ship capable of getting to this object in time to study it and eliminate the potential danger to the Earth.
This crucial mission is assigned to Starfleet Admiral James T. Kirk, who takes command of the USS Enterprise NCC1701 and all of his old crew. So their journey begins ...
Star Trek: The Motion Picture 4K ReviewLike many others, I did not know about the existence of the "Star Trek" universe, found out about it only thanks to the remake of 2009, but I will tell you about the remake another time, and now about the original.
In 1966, the television series "Star Trek" was released, and gained immense popularity with viewers. It ran from 1966-1969. In 1973, an animated version of the television series was released, showing it for only one year. In 1978, the television series Star Trek: Phase II was released, but it still hasn't come out. The producers feared failure as the storyline was pretty crazy and Star Wars was growing in popularity.
I grew up watching the Star Wars film series, and I still regard them as the benchmark for fiction, Sci-Fi and commercial films. In theory, I should hate Star Trek, as they have always been fierce competitors, but still, I was interested to learn about a competing subculture (natural human instinct). Until now, there is no exact data on who has more fans - "Star Wars" or "Star Trek". But at least Stap Wars has been seen by a lot more people. For an introduction to this topic, you can watch the movie "Fanboys".
And now about the film itself, it's pretty good, sometimes even good.
Despite the fact that the film was filmed in 1979, then "Star Wars" "Alien" "A Space Odyssey 2001" had already been released, and our subject had a budget much larger than the above films. But the special effects pumped up, even at that time they did not look very good. The creators clearly overestimated their capabilities, in vain they added many elements, especially flights at hyperspeed looked very funny, even I can do this effect on my home computer using a standard program.
Secondly, the film is terribly boring. It's just awfully tightened. Even starting from the first seconds of the narration, a dark screen appears and music sounds (this is when viewed on a license). Many scenes are simply unnecessary. This is not an intelligent Solaris, but a good Sci-Fi, it should be dynamic, but here everything is drawn-out and boring.
But I liked the scenery, the elements of the ship "Enterprise" and "Viger", they apparently spent a huge (at that time) budget. The costumes were amused, the cosmonauts are unlikely to walk in such, they are probably uncomfortable.
The acting is quite good. It is clear that this is far from Stanislavsky's system, but it does not hurt the eye. The only pity is that there are no stars at all, because they called themselves "Star Trek".
I got the feeling that the film was filmed by at least two directors. It's just that the first hour and a half of the film leaves much to be desired, but over the last 20 minutes my opinion about the film has changed dramatically, at the end there was an action and a deep meaning. Struck by the twist with "Viger".
The music in the film is not bad, although not perfect, very pretentious, not memorable. But symphonic. Which is only found in old Hollywood movies.
Conclusion: not the best, but very interesting representative of the genre. Do not forget that this is an adaptation of the series, and they usually fail. You can watch, but you need to be patient. The main thing is to sit to the end, then the opinion about the film will change dramatically. Although the 2009 remake is much better and accommodates more of the Star Trek universe.
I will be watching the other ten films, because the adventure is just beginning.
