The plot of the new part will unfold after the events of "Fast and the Furious 7". Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is forced into a fight with his younger brother (John Cena) - he works for the arch rival of Toretto Cypher (Charlize Theron).
Fast and Furious F9 The Fast Saga 4K ReviewSettled somewhere in the outback, Dominic (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) understand that they are physically unable to live a calm and peaceful life - any car that drives up to the house causes them anxiety for Brian's little son and a desire to take up arms. Fortunately, there is an excellent opportunity to get out of the comfort zone - the plane carrying an important cargo of their friend, Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), was attacked and fell somewhere in the jungle. At first glance, a trifling matter is to find a safe in the wreckage and open it. But in the photographs, Dominic notices the attacker has a silver cross on a pendant - only his younger brother, Jacob Toretto (John Cena), had such a cross, who had long been expelled from the family.
By the tenth film in the series (9 main parts and one spin-off), "Fast and the Furious" received a rare franchise status for modern cinema, which does not need reviews. Even a long title now seems like a rudiment - apparently, that's why the picture is released with the laconic title F9. Well, seriously, if you watched the last parts without displeased grumbling due to the fact that the series has long betrayed its street roots and reached the level of "Bond" and "Mission: Impossible" in ambition, then you will like the ninth part anyway. Another question is how strong. This is where the fans of the series will have a pleasant surprise, because Fast and Furious 9 is one of the most insane and touching parts of the series, which crosses the boyish drama of the first film and the inventive action of the fifth.
After the faded eighth part, it began to seem that "Fast and the Furious" was becoming obsolete: the episode "jumped over the shark", and even such provocative moves as Dominic's "betrayal" to save his son did not evoke any emotional response. It was hard to fall in love with the film, even postironically - is this not a clear sign that the franchise has sunk to the bottom? The prospects for the ninth part on paper also seemed vague: the creators promised a completely ridiculous return of a long-forgotten brother and touched on the final trilogy. Stay on the post of director F. Gary Gray, and the series could have been buried right away, but Justin Lin returned to the franchise - he not only understands the aesthetics of the series better than anyone, but in his time turned it into a box-office hit. He returned the "Fast and the Furious" to its former greatness.
"Fast and Furious 9" is most easily compared to the video game Uncharted 4: Among Thieves, in which the brother of the protagonist also appeared out of nowhere, and the main conflict in the story was internal - the protagonist chose between a measured family life and a desire for adventurism. From the latter in the film, not only Dominic suffers, but also Letty - they envy the retired Brian and Mia, but they themselves cannot leave the game, because they suffer from a lack of adrenaline. The typical afterburner "last thing / race / adventure" almost for the first time in the series makes the heroes come to terms with the fact that they will not get out of this. The series, it's scary to imagine, is finally growing up, overgrown with nuances and shameful dramatic elements.
Another sign of not expanding, but deepening the franchise - Jacob's introduction into the rich lore of "Fast and the Furious". The film begins with a touching, like the ending of "Cars" segment on the racetrack with the death of Toretto Sr. Even such an unambiguous event, instead of an obvious rapprochement between the brothers, causes an aggravation of their conflict. Subsequent flashbacks not only return the long-forgotten street races to the series, but surprisingly boldly push the brothers together: out of envy and - suddenly - one of them's involvement in the death of his father. This thread culminates in a Po-Kaufmanian surreal segment with Dominic's odyssey through the back streets of memory. Such bold narrative devices have never been seen in Fast and Furious.
The main forces of "Fast and the Furious" - cars and beautiful girls - in the new part have also changed: the heroines are now not sexualized, self-sufficient, and also got their own action scene, which looks many times better than the shame from the movie "Avengers: Endgame". In the classic episode with a large-scale party, extra girls now go not in bikinis, but in white dresses against the backdrop of a London residence, and even the sex symbol of our time, rapper Cardi B, appears in the film in full special uniforms up to her neck and shines only with her face. "Fast and the Furious" is no longer a relic of the 2000s and not a "movie for batey", but a franchise ready for experimentation and adaptation to modern realities, which, you see, in a couple of years will release a successful spin-off with female characters.
However, the main thing in "Fast and the Furious" from the fifth part is the action episodes: after Brian and Dominic drove a huge safe across Rio, it became clear that the level of madness would constantly increase and return to normal street racing - not an option. In the last parts, the heroes flew from one skyscraper to another and managed to outwit the infrared warhead, but the ninth film made these episodes thanks to ... a magnet. Episodes from Edinburgh and Tbilisi will be included in the canon of the best action scenes in the series. It is difficult to explain in words how inventive action can be, built on just the processes of attraction and rejection, but believe me, the last time so much creativity poured from the screen was only at the end of Christopher Nolan's "Argument".
The main thing is that all this is done with an increased level of self-irony: the heroes seriously argue why for so many years they have not received a single wound, swear that they carry out engineering and physical calculations before tricks, and, yes, they fly into open space. The creators did not reinvent "Fast and the Furious", but again correctly placed the accents - it turned out, no joke, an excellent blockbuster that will not only return the viewer to the theaters, but for the first time in many years will make him sincerely think about what awaits the episode next. Well, really, they have already been in orbit - what next?
