There is one rotten place on earth, from where even the most notorious villains dream of dumping. Belle Reeve Prison is for superpowered criminals. She's hell. She is also the recruitment base for the super-secret project "Suicide Squad".

The story is familiar as the world: a dozen supervillains, toiling in a super-protected prison, are sent on a secret mission - they need to steal some experimental weapon from a dictator of one of the third world countries. In return, the prisoners will get a chance to be released: if, of course, they survive the crowds of enemies and do not anger the authorities, who are ready to blow up their brains at any second with a remote bomb. Among the suicides are the killers Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacekeepers (John Cena) with almost identical abilities, controlling the rodents Pied Piper II (Daniela Melshior), a huge man-eating shark (Sylvester Stallone), covered with colored spots Man-in-polka dots (David Dastmalchian) and a whole bunch of assorted villains - from TDK (Nathan Fillion), whose hands can fly off the body and live their own lives, to anthropomorphic Lasky and old acquaintances: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and the military Rick Flagg ( Yuel Kinnaman), who oversees the detachment.

As you probably remember, in 2018, James Gunn was fired from his post as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - all because of old offensive tweets that suddenly surfaced in the global information field. Disney Studios, of course, have since come to their senses (helped by disgruntled fans and industry figures), but on his short unplanned vacation Gunn managed to subscribe to the new "Suicide Squad" - a film of the main comic competitors of Marvel, DC. They just started to move in a new direction: instead of failed attempts to build a marvel-like cinematic universe, Warner Bros. decided to let their heroes and authors roam. If you want to make "Joker" in the style of early Scorsese - do it. Do you want a new "Batman" without Affleck - yes please, what are the problems. A sequel to the disastrous "Suicide Squad", which is actually not a sequel at all, but a film of a completely different tonality and genre - why not?

Gunn found himself in a diametrically opposite world: instead of a painstakingly constructed MCU, where almost every creative step is personally controlled by Kevin Feige, there is a primitive cinematic chaos, where you do not need to tie the plot of your film to the upcoming large-scale crossover and, in principle, think about how your ideas will fit into global narrative. Such an approach is clearly closer to the director: even his "Guardians of the Galaxy" favorably differed in that they were, as it were, on the periphery of the Marvel universe and were connected with other "Avengers" very conditionally - both in terms of plot and stylistically. The new "Suicide Squad" is completely free from any connections, even from the connection with the previous part. This is not a continuation, but a radical rethinking, work on mistakes and the opportunity to give a second chance to heroes who were previously misused. This feature of Gann's painting is gracefully reflected in the original title - The Suicide Squad (Eyre's film was just Suicide Squad, and The article in this case serves as an additional accent: it's not just Suicide Squad, but "the very" Suicide Squad).

Moreover, the creative freedom here is clearly not imaginary - judging by the way the film came out, Gann was not controlled by anyone at all (or those who tried, at some point simply gave up). This is probably the most violent and craziest mainstream comic strip of those that belong to the big franchises: here heads fly, blood pours profusely, faces are effectively scattered into meatballs. With Suicide Squad, James returns to his directing roots: brutal splatter comedies and outright trash, on which he worked in the legendary Troma studio under the wing of exploitation king Lloyd Kaufman. He shoots a multimillion-dollar blockbuster with the enthusiasm of a daring debutant, who for the first time was given a camera in his hands and told to do everything in his crazy head - and this, honestly, is the best possible approach to such a movie. Even some "Deadpool", which for a long time has taken the title of the main movie comic strip with an R rating, against the background of the new "Squad", the film feels rather safe, and its cynicism is feigned. In Gann, not only the villains die a cruel death, but also the central heroes (that is, their squadron fully justifies their name) and other "good" guys who were unlucky enough to fall under the hot hand of prisoners-operatives. And his main antagonist may be, for example, a huge purple starfish - something quite in the spirit of "thromov" zombie chickens or thrash classics like alien killer tomatoes.

Whether intentionally or not, Gunn is showing a hefty middle finger to everything he does with Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe with his film. While they over and over again hire indie directors - who have no idea how to work with action scenes, needed solely in order to competently build character arcs within huge "phases" - "Suicide Squad" demonstrates what will happen if within the framework of a blockbuster, let someone who has come out of cheap genre cinema to roam around, someone who understands the value of eccentrics and is not afraid of crazy concepts (and such were Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez and even Steven Spielberg). It will turn out to be at least fun. Although toys with the hero torn to shreds, perhaps, it will not be possible to sell a lot.

At the same time, even without going beyond the boundaries of the misanthropic style, Gann remains a great romantic. Behind the whole bunch of released guts in Suicide Squad, you can see the same dramedy about a dysfunctional family that was at the heart of Guardians of the Galaxy. His heroes - that the aging killer Bloodsport, that the bloodthirsty jingoist patriot with the ironic name Peacemaker, that the quiet man in polka dots, representing his own mother instead of enemies, are unsettled and awkward, looking for support among the same scum of society as themselves. They joke a lot (almost always successfully) and tease each other, sometimes they even shoot their comrades for nothing, but you fool anyone with this: in fact, Gann's Suicide Squad, like his Guardians, is a group therapy session, a history of society non-anonymous psychopathic killers trying to come to terms with themselves. By very radical methods, of course, but what else to expect from the film, whose moral center is the Portuguese homeless drug addict with the face of Taiki Waititi.
