Five million years ago, the Earth was visited by extraterrestrial beings Celestials, who conducted a series of genetic experiments on proto-mankind, eventually creating two diametrically opposed races: long-lived Eternals and genetically unstable monstrously grotesque Deviants (Destroyers).

According to the plan of the Celestials, the former were supposed to protect the Earth, since the latter were eager to destroy it, which led to continuous enmity between these higher races. Also, the Eternals and Deviants followed the development of humanity throughout its history, while simultaneously participating in cosmic political intrigues. It is noteworthy that the notorious Thanos, the main villain of Avengers: Infinity War, belongs to the third generation of Eternals.

Eternals 4K Review
The Eternals are about to reach the Russian box office, overcoming lockdowns, a very remarkable film in the context of the Marvel universe. Firstly, this is so far the largest "Marvel" movie after "Avengers: Endgame" (and before, probably, "Multiverse Madness"). Secondly, this is the first time that an Oscar-winning director, Chloe Zhao, has shot the company's film, taking the gold statuette from The Land of Nomads. Third, The Eternals is by far the lowest rated MCU film, losing even Toor 2 in the ratings. The latter, considering other details, is especially interesting: the cinema was clearly aiming at the prestigious space of the "author's blockbuster". But on the way, apparently, the sight went off, and Zhao became just one of the victims of the ruthless Marvel machine.

A long time ago, at the dawn of human civilization, the Eternals flew to the planet - ageless beings with superpowers. On the instructions of the Celestials, huge cosmic creatures, forging new suns from the universal energy, they fought with the vile creatures Deviants and thereby protected humanity. True, they were forbidden to interfere in conflicts between people, so the Eternals watched for millennia how entire nations perish because of wars and how the technologies they brought with them become deadly weapons.

When all the Deviants were exterminated, the immortal aliens went to live with people and waited until Celestial Arishom sent them home. But for some reason he did not send everything. Cersei (Gemma Chan, who already appeared in the MCU as a minor villain in Captain Marvel) settled in London, where she teaches children biology today and has an affair with a simple guy Dane (Kit Harrington). In general, he is trying to lead an ordinary life, until a series of strange earthquakes suddenly sweeps across the planet, and one of the seemingly extinct Deviants is announced right in the middle of the British capital. Moreover, the monster for some reason possesses the powers of Ayak (Salma Hayek), the leader of the Eternals. Immortal warriors decide to get together and find out what is happening - it will soon turn out that their entire mission was a cover for something much more global and frightening.

An attempt to explain not even the plot, but just the plot of "The Eternals" was not just stretched out for two paragraphs - this is a huge, two and a half hour movie, in terms of dramatic ambitions unprecedented for the MCU (yes, "Endgame" went longer, but the main storyline there is still very straightforward). If "Guardians of the Galaxy" once lifted the cinematic universe from Earth and sent it to conquer the stars, then Chloe Zhao's film is a cosmogonic myth of this world, explaining how the planets were born in it and who exactly pulled humanity out of the cradle of civilization. And at the same time - a classic superhero ensemble, where you have to ride around the world in search of all the members of the group and, ideally, also tell some kind of story between overweight Mesopotamian flashbacks and an extensive exposition.

It sounds, perhaps, like the heaviest movie in the world - but, surprisingly, "The Eternals" do not bend too much under this huge layer of information. Some foreign critics have compared the film to Zach Snyder's Justice League, in the sense that it is also an epic blockbuster that does not spare the timing of its characters. The coincidences are obvious: here are ancient myths, and a pile of chronotopes, and one of the Eternals, Ikaris (Richard Madden), can fly and shoot a laser from his eyes - at one point he is even openly called "Superman" (I wonder if they asked for separate approval from lawyers Marvel to this little gag). Still, Zhao's film is more of an anti-League.

Snyder made an "epic" movie in the most direct, antique sense - that is, one that is more interested in grandiose ideas and conflicts of truly cosmic proportions. Zhao's focus is exactly the opposite. In all this mythical madness, it is most interesting for her to peer into faces, to find banal human weaknesses in immortal souls. All her heroes are emphatically vulnerable and imperfect: Fina (Angelina Jolie) suffers from memories from past lives forgotten millions of years ago, due to which she has bouts of uncontrolled aggression; Sprite (Leah McHugh) - an immortal child who senses adult passions, but cannot realize them; Fastos (Brian Tyree Henry) became disillusioned with people because of how they disposed of his inventions, but found comfort in love; Druig (Barry Keogan), who knows how to command the minds, became angry with the whole world and left with a small community to live in the Amazonian jungle; Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) can run fast, but hears nothing; and even the all-powerful Ikaris suffers from secrets that he has to hide.

As in his Oscar-winning work, Zhao is re-examining a strange community of broken people (well, almost people), whose life collapsed at one point, and the goal encoded in the DNA turned out to be a hoax. The gold of the ears of corn from the "Land of the Nomads" may have turned into the golden magic runes of the "Eternals", but the rest of the director's signature style remained more or less the same. She still loves to place characters in spacious pastoral landscapes and, in the spirit of Terrence Malick, fixes on fine motor skills, gentle looks, rare touches. This is the story of gods who most of all want to become just people, and in this sense, the film fits perfectly into the overall Marvel picture of the world. Where banal humanity always defeats a grandiose universal design, and higher interdimensional beings can be defeated with a simple ingenuity, as Doctor Strange did.

The most interesting thing in "The Eternals" is just watching how Zhao builds the dynamics of relationships in the team, puts the all-powerful superheroes at a simple dining table from IKEA. Her film can be very cozy, sweet and witty - but only, unfortunately, in those moments when it is distracted from the main plot. Sooner or later, the "Eternals" have to return to the familiar superhero tracks, rush into battles with faceless enemies with the most boring designs in the world, laugh at the jokes of the obligatory comedian religion (this time, fortunately, really funny) and feigned surprise at plot twists: oh, it turns out that the most villainous creature in the world really turned out to be a villain. What a surprise.

In their films, Marvel has long been trying to combine global metaplots with simple human stories - for this they have been inviting indie directors for years, who may not know how to stage action, but are able to work with characters. And if before that the formula more or less worked, then on the "Eternals", it seems, something finally broke. Maybe Zhao's vision just turned out to be too strong to be so easily adjusted to the corporate stencil: in her film, the lyrical actively conflicts with the epic, big entertaining thoughts - with the hardened genre tropes. The Eternals is hardly the worst movie in the MCU (not even close), but it shows better than any other that the studio needs to change something in its approach to film comics. While Marvel will reshoot the new "Doctor Strange" from Sam Raimi because he came out too "scary", nothing good will come of it, if you invite at least two or even five-time Oscar winners.
