The "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel is one of many Hollywood blockbusters caught in a production hell, connected not only with the coronavirus pandemic, but also with the scandalous dismissal of James Gunn as the film's director, the search for a replacement and his unexpected return. However, while Disney was trying hard to fit into the staples of the new social agenda, Gunn managed to intercept the producers of Warner Bros. Working on a new version of "Suicide Squad" and the series "Peacekeeper" for three whole years cut off the director from the cinematic universe of Marvel. To our collective delight, Gunn still found time to return to his extended superhero family for one final chord. After the director's sudden appointment as head of DC Studios, we can't expect any other collaborations with Disney. In this regard, the new "Guardians of the Galaxy" is perceived as no other than a farewell movie, stitched together with threads of nostalgia for the times when everything around was a little simpler.

Unlike "Thor", "Captain America" or the same "Iron Man", Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy", which started back in 2014, is a franchise in every sense conceptual, having a unique director's vision, which somehow magically managed not to fade in the bowels of the soulless machine called Disney. The third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy, like Lana Del Rey's new album, is enjoyable and beloved precisely in its predictability, a recognizable atmosphere created from elements of space western, hooligan comedy and old family movies in the spirit of early Chris Columbus. Gunn doesn't cheat on his favorite shtick, but he also doesn't play the same song twice, every now and then introducing new components to the plot. Like all the final chapters, the threequel "Guardians" is full of tearful tragedy, and again the director turns to the most human in the audience, putting at stake not the fate of the whole world, as it was, for example, in "Avengers: Infinity War" or the new "Spider-Man," but the life of Rocket's angry little raccoon. The mystery of the origin of the furriest member of the team is revealed through dozens of openly manipulative flashbacks about life in captivity and dreams of freedom, against which even the third "Toy Story" seems like a dry geography textbook.

Behind the layers of the textbook story about the power of friendship and love you can see both a reference to the literary Dr. Frankenstein, and a satire on modern eugenics or even the director's manifesto of abolitionism. Without too much moralizing, Gunn, who just three years ago experienced the death of his beloved dog, reminds us that animals may not be intelligent, but they are definitely sentient beings who have a fundamental right not to be human property, no matter how lofty the motives of their so-called owners.

If the first two parts of "Guardians of the Galaxy" lacked something, then perhaps it was this - a powerful humanistic idea, capable if not to build a new system of values in the viewer's mind, then at least to inspire him to acts of truly cosmic kindness, based on respect and unconditional love for all living creatures, be it a raccoon, a walrus or a dog. After all, what Peter Quill can do is available to absolutely anyone on the planet.
