Estella (Emma Stone) has never been "obedient." From school fights to her flashy black and white hair, everything about the girl cried out for protest. As she struggles to break into the 1970s fashion world, she realizes that good intentions are boring and stifling. The heroine's insane alter ego, Cruella DeVille, breaks loose from the chain and goes to the stage of moderate hell with boundless extravagance and punk extravaganza.

Immediately after the announcement of the project in 2019, many in social networks reasonably asked the question: how important is it at all to delve into the origins of absolute evil, albeit comical, but without excuses? After all, this is exactly how the couturier-flayer with a passion for spotted furs appeared - in the animated "Dalmatians" in 1961 and twice in the game version with Glenn Close. The stream of inflamed consciousness, uncontrollable mania, the alphabet of phrases for LGBTQ allies, instantly became a style icon for drag queens of all stripes.

The creator of the original book, Dodie Smith, did not provide for other functions; there was no need to talk about sympathy for the unambiguous killer, who became one of her own free will. The authors of the new reading - the director of "Tony Against All" Craig Gillespie, the screenwriter of "The Favorite" Tony McNamara - came up with the idea to make DeVille confusing and ambiguous. Still, a trend is a trend, honor and the demands of the "mouse factory" must be defended, the fashion for rethinking must be supported. As a result, the film manages to foist a list of jagged patterns on familiar, differently formulated questions, find the real problem of a tainted soul in a dysfunctional family, and how it should come off on costumes, soundtrack (The Beatles, Nina Simone, Blondie) and actors.

"Cruella" came out gloomier than standard protocols, salutary ironic tired of "Joker", defiling further competitors in the rental and expectedly overloaded. What milestones cannot be crossed for the sake of a nasty moth gnawing at a dress, a pair of martinis, lighters or "the first gay character in the history of the studio" (Art, Cruella's assistant, is not such: before him, at least there were LeFou from "Beauty and the Beast" and kissing every second rebel girls in recent Star Wars). "Cruella" desperately wants to go beyond the canon, to jump above parental control and requests, but sooner or later it runs into the same fabulous distances and cultivates an unparalleled field of compromises, against which it was started in the first place.

We do not touch the Dalmatians who are rooting for Tottenham in the film, we comically take revenge only on really bad animals - people. The latter are represented by the Baroness (Emma Thompson), Estella's toxic boss, who steals her sketches, kills unwanted people in the literal and figurative sense, and soon regrets everything. Inverted humanism, mixed with boutique feminism, kilometers of fabric and advertising slogans "I'm the future," where the "growling" will be taken, turns out to be sour and not at all angry. It seems like edible pancakes are made of them, the creators are rewarded for their work, but it pricks, presses and rubs perceptibly, and this despite the fact that visually honed Disney haute couture has few equal.

On Stone's hand is quite Thanos's glove, the stones are collected on time, the situation is again expected to be saved. Obviously, Emma did not pursue the goal of copying Glenn Close, for which it is worth thanking her (only a few succeed in the camp). The actress made the rise or fall of Cruella in a major, thorough and even relaxed. No, really, demonic laughter, which has become a trademark - a look in itself and a slightly Nietzschean abyss work for it, which is also high for an audience of 12+. Thompson even manages to get around them: he plays a scum rare for his filmography, which delivers even more enthusiasm, scattering into pearls and boyish quotes with aristocratic intonation and an olive in their teeth (not you, they are you). Their joint scenes and dialogues from the standpoint of comedy timing sparkle at all from chewing on every line, drawn-out darling and throwing squints.

The main rebel of the film is rightfully the costume designer Jenny Bevan (Mad Max: Fury Road), the creator of hundreds of mind-blowing outfits that every budding designer (s) must envy. Rock-n-roll never dies, punks are still good, she treats rebellious culture with ingenious meticulousness, infinite inventiveness. Getting off the needle of Disney approval, even after a tedious two-plus hours of timekeeping, didn't feel like it. One in the field is not a warrior, the studio's efforts are still symbolic, tokenism has not evaporated. It is a pity to watch the angry and boring ones, the cinema says, but the evil and energetic ones are dear, unexpectedly pleasant. "Cruella" as an origin is not afraid, continues to feed with false promises, tries not to lament. Left the route? So great, stay a little bit mad.
