The Last Black Man in San Francisco 4K Review
Jimmy Failes dreams of reclaiming his Victorian home, allegedly built by his grandfather in the heart of San Francisco. With the help of his best friend, Monta Jimmy is trying to find his place in a fast-paced city. Trying his best to restore broken ties with his family and rebuild society around him, he is blinded by his hopes and does not see the real situation.

The amazing beauty and unique atmosphere of San Francisco has served as the backdrop for many great films, starting with Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. But in few places she acted as a full-fledged protagonist. In the first five minutes of "The Last Black in San Francisco" it becomes clear that in this film San Franc is highlighted - as well as the fact that it is one of the most notable American film debuts in recent years.

Here homeless people sing opera arias on the street. Here the legend of American punk Jello Biafra works as a guide for tourists. Here, the showdown of black boys in the area is interrupted by quotes from Stanislavsky. Skaters, squatters and other social margins form a well-coordinated round dance in The Last Black, and here it is impossible to clearly identify anyone as a positive or negative hero. They all have their own idiosyncratic pluses and minuses, and no one wants to fade into the background.

This story is so autobiographical that debutant actor Jimmy Fails, who wrote the script, did not change his character's name to a fictional one in the script. Surprisingly in this young African American film and how it parallels George Danelia's films, Joe Talbot's gaze is equally poetic and clear at the same time. Two friends closely intertwined by fate, making an odyssey through the districts and quarters - these are practically Valiko and Ruben Khachikyan from "Mimino", wandering around snow-covered Moscow. And the incessant and initially doomed to failure search for a home proceeds in accordance with the words from the film "Thirty-three" - "We are all guests on this planet." I can’t believe that an American who has not yet turned thirty is familiar with Soviet film classics. But there is something very recognizable about the story of how black heroes try to fit into a changing cityscape, where themes of social and racial identity are raised and words like "gentrification" and "renovation" are thrown around.

Alongside Blind Spots, Sorry to Bother you, and other recent successes of black cinema, Talbot's film is surprisingly fresh and confident, but not without commonplaces. The hippie anthem to the city of the Golden Gate will surely sound, and more than once, about the fact that you need to weave flowers into your hair before visiting it. But it is this combination of opposites that makes The Last Black stand out from similar American indie films (and is thousands of light years ahead of the Oscar-winning Green Book). “You can't hate San Francisco until you love it,” says the main character in the finale. And the universality of the message of the story becomes clear to the viewer from anywhere in the world - you just need to replace the name of the settlement with the desired one.
