In full accordance with Pixar traditions, “Cars 2 Ultra HDR” begin with a short film. In Hawaiian Vacations, we meet again with characters from Toy Story / Toy Story / (1995): Ken and Barbie do not end up on a summer vacation with Bonnie, but find themselves in a tropical paradise, where the first kiss of the dolls in love happens. This Pixar is at the peak of form: a strong plot, full of humor, talented shooting, beautiful characteristic scenes (the episode in which Mr. Kolyuchka is listened to by aliens is simply brilliant), wit and emotions, and as a dessert - a wonderful ending after the final credits.
This reminder of how Pixar raised his bar high doesn’t make life easier for Cars 2. One of the most criticized - on the "Tomatometer" site of Rotten Tomatoes, he currently has 74% - and the least-grossing films of the studio (at the box office he collected $ 462 million, so everything in life is relatively ...) moved to the franchise rank thanks to several short films and good sales of related products. The first "Cars UHD" / Cars / (2006) was one of those rare films for children, in which it was proposed to slow down a little and relax a bit. This time it's the other way around: the Lightning McQueen racing car and the dull Mater tow truck not only take part in Grand Prix racing around the world, but also end up in a stylish spy movie from the mid-60s. Two storylines to the end remain unconnected, but elegant spies, a visual hash and comedy moves are enough to have fun.
Pixar has always been crazy about 60s pop culture (remember at least the retro accessories in The Incredibles, The / (2004) or WALL-E / WALL-E / (2008), which from "Hello, Dolly"), and "Cars 2 UHD" literally permeated by this adoration. From the primitive but firmly heading into the head of guitar riffs by Michael Giaccino performed by Finn McMeisle and worship of all kinds of technical gadgets, to the encrypted greetings of secret agents, the whole film is a declaration of love not only to agent 007, but also to its American counterparts like “Man from D.Ya. D.I. ”or“ Get Smart ”/ Get Smart / (2008). Finn McMistle (who was originally voiced by Michael Caine in the original, for a moment), Aston Martin, stuffed with all kinds of weapons from Department Q, penetrates an oil platform belonging to the villains, and his escape from there reminds everyone who forgot about it that in terms of action Pixar can give odds to anyone. Best of all, “Cars 2 UHD” look exactly in action scenes, whether it be a night race in Tokyo or bustle on the runway arranged by a reconnaissance aircraft.
But where there is no action, there are no unexpected plot twists or characteristic numbers that Pixar specializes in, the film sags. The plot is so confusing that this in itself is admiring: everyone is chasing a camera that can generate electromagnetic pulses that destroy cars right during the race. However, by and large there are no surprises in it. There are a lot of new characters in the film, but, with the exception of a couple of British spies (McMistle and Holly DeLux), a Russian racing car symbolizing Vitaly Petrov (and voiced by Vitaly Petrov), and the demonic Francesco Bernoulli from Formula 1, they are little remembered.
On top of that, it’s hard to recall a Piksarov film in which there would be so much talk, but these dialogs can hardly be called “sparkling” or “brilliant.” The topics of jokes are quite primitive: cultural differences, superemotional Italians and gags about the right and left-hand traffic. The reason for particularly stormy fun is that wasabi is mistaken for ice cream. The dynamics of the development of relations between McQueen and Mater are too simplified, and the moral in the scene when McQueen asks his clumsy friend to change his appearance in order to better adapt to the big world is somehow too correct. For children, of course, what you need, but nothing more, and this is actually uncharacteristic for Pixar films.
As always, the film has a lot of delightful, eye-catching little things (pay attention to shooting as dirt from under the wheels of racing cars splashes the camera lens), lovingly staged street scenes and inspired visual puns.
