To the start, attention, march: flapping the flag, and having jumped the white line, the riders tend to take their driver's seat as soon as the Le Mans 24 race begins. Teams have to turn circles on the track during the day - this is a competition not only for speed, but and endurance. In a sense, the film itself, directed by James Mangold “Ford vs Ferrari”, tried on the basic principles of the race in finding a balance between pace and stamina. The race will begin only in the third act, but it will have to pass the test much more difficult before it - preparation for the start. One day, designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and racer Ken Miles (Christian Bale) combined their passion and dexterity under the Ford flag to be the first to finish 24 hours in the race.

The film itself started at the Toronto festival and closer to the award season was at the box office with shameless ambitions for figurines of different calibers. The director prepared the film according to an ideal and time-tested Oscar recipe: an inspiring real story at the heart of the script, two Class A actors in the lead roles, a drama of choice and the sacrifice of any compromise. Nerve and dynamics, perfect technical equipment - an audiovisual solution can turn your head even to the spectator indifferent to cars. At the same time, “Ford vs. Ferrari” is a biopic, drama, comedy and buddy movie, but by and large it does not belong to any of the camps in full. At the same time, the body of the film does not crumble into spare parts: each of the parts is in its place and gives rise to a single serviceable mechanism.

The engine is the real story of the confrontation between auto-conglomerates. Henry Ford II was trapped and on the brink of ruin, his cars ceased to be fashionable (and reliable), the merger with Ferrari would save the situation, but they got off the hook at the last moment. Now you need to take revenge, and soon. And this can be achieved only by rubbing the nose of the main opponent - Enzo Ferrari, who refused to go to the world. For a breakthrough in Le Mans (Ferrari secured a multi-year series of victories for his brand), they involved retired racer Carroll Shelby, who once won the daily competition, and he dragged the pilot and mechanic Ken Miles, a man with absurd temper and a player clearly not a team . But even if Miles suffers from a lack of diplomacy, he can identify the flaws of the new FORD GT 40 model by the sound of the engine.

The search for a compromise does not stop at just creating the perfect racing car (the same equation is solved: speed plus endurance), but it enters into a much larger-scale confrontation between the general and the private. Mangold talks about principles, fame, concessions and courage, if not in the old-fashioned, then in the classical reading. His masculinity may be a little outdated, but devoid of toxicity - he saved this quality for the costs of capitalism. He put the question of honor at the heart of the race, almost in a mythological ploy, where a man needs a feat to become a hero and identify himself. Scenes on the move change the speed mode: an exciting small-town race gives way to smooth braking closer to home evening, where Ken shares the secrets of piloting with his son, and again picks up speed in the offices of the Ford leadership to accelerate on the test track and exceed the speed already in Le Mans. Sometimes almost the only woman in history appears in the frame - the wife of Ken Miles Molly (Katrina Balf), who, although she stayed at home, give her a chance - she will get ahead of any rider or bring soda after the “fight”.

Christian Bale has transformed again for the role, but it seems to be the last time. Matt Damon really grabbed Shelby’s style and organics, but in general the tandem magic didn’t happen between the actors - there wasn’t enough chemistry, even though everyone was in his place. And this, perhaps, invisible and elusive magic, which is commonly called the magic of cinema, is the only thing that Ford against Ferrari lacks in order to win all the races of the award race. James Mangold, speaking in different weight categories (on his account and “Logan”, and “Train to Yuma”, and even the romantic “Kate and Leo”) constructed the perfect film, where every inch of the body was calibrated and the best fuel was poured. However, in all his technicality, there is not enough folly and dashing courage to become a true legend for centuries, and Ford vs Ferrari is unlikely to go down in history as a feat. But the picture will not become ordinary - the opus of conscience, made on conscience, once again suggests that sometimes not only victory, but also participation is important.
