In the center of the plot - the stories of several residents of the New York area of Washington Heights. The main characters are the owner of a small shop Usnavi, a girl from a beauty salon Vanessa, who dreams of moving to the Dominican Republic to open her own bar, a Stanford student Nina, who cannot continue her studies because of money, and Benny, who works for her father.
In the Heights 4K ReviewThe musical 'At the height of a dream' impresses with the quality of the production and the lively atmosphere of the events taking place, as if the heroes of the film do not play for the camera, but literally live with music, dancing from morning to evening with an incendiary rhythm. And, by the way, absolutely everyone dances: fat and thin, beautiful and not so, old and young. I am glad that the creators did not try to choose only ideal dancers in terms of external parameters, but, on the contrary, invited the most ordinary people with bellies, booty and wrinkles, as if they had brought everyone straight from real sleeping areas.
The director of the film, John M. Chu, who has already got his hands on musicals, having removed several parts of the 'Step Up' franchise, made a truly bright and colorful story about love, family and dreams, but only the story of the heroes could not be told. In the film, they sing a lot about feelings and working life with references to their roots, reminding everyone where they all came from and where they are now. The heroes desperately scold America for racism and social inequality, but at the same time sincerely confess their love for the country where they live and make their dreams come true.
In the film, the authors raise many important topics, as if deliberately trying to run through all aspects of the social life of Hispanics, but only there was no time left for the main characters, although the timing is almost two and a half hours. The first hour the viewer is introduced to the characters for a long time, then the problems are voiced, and at the end that long-awaited love-carrot and all the cases begins. The final scenes with amazing camera work, where the heroes, violating all the laws of gravity, dance and sing on the walls of a multi-storey building, or dramatic scenes of the last journey to paradise of one of the heroes, look especially great. It all looks very beautiful, large-scale and spectacular. But at the same time, despite the visual beauty, I still want to see on the screen not only dance songs, but also a good story of the main characters, which will be interesting to watch.
In general, there are many songs and beautiful dances in the film, but there is practically no history of the heroes. It is interesting to watch, but because of the long timekeeping, it becomes boring in the end.
